I have family that regularly spend time in the Radium/Invermere/Windermere area and this is definitely the first I've heard about it "dying". Covid restrictions certainly hampered tourism in the area but I've seen no signs of it being a poor year.

Prices for hotels/B&Bs in Radium this year skyrocketed over last year. It was a bit eye-watering how much I have to pay to visit for a weekend. They've gotta be doing just fine. I'll ask around when I'm there this summer.

I’ve been twice in the last year (summer and winter) and while I had heard the same my experience wasn’t much different than previous covid years.

I've been scanning a few cities in the US, everywhere has jumped in price. I was assuming it's hotels trying to make back the money they lost over the past 3 years or just riding the inflation excuse. Hell, even a Motel 6 on a freeway is $200 now.

Sites like Expedia, Hotwire, Kayak, etc are flooded with Air B&B garbage in bad neighborhoods and the hidden fees are brutal. It sucks right now.

You can filter out the airBNB stuff on Expedia for sure not sure about other sites.

Weird but I just booked my hotels for Tokyo and Osaka and they were $65 to $80cd/nite! 3.5 and 4 stars. If I knew that I would have stayed for 2 weeks instead of 6 nights. Can't even pay to change my flights...

They were like $200-$300us/nite before covid.

There will probably be a shift with the younger crowd away from regional driving destinations as fewer and fewer are getting drivers licenses and vehicles.

We used to own in Whitefish, and it was awesome. My buddy who bought us out says that now it's full of Texans and Californians. And costs have gone through the roof. They still love going down, but they rarely go into town now because of pricing at the bars and restaurants.

For us, the Columbia valley is awesome. We golf, we mountain bike and we ski. To have a lake there is just a bonus. And it isn't very far.

The best part of the gopher museum are the binders they have filled with all the hate mail they've received. it's amazing how much people far and abroad care about our humble little shack on the prairies.

Fewer people are having kids as well. A lot of these closer destinations are preferable for people with kids, as you don't have to pay for airfare for them, kids aren't the best to have for various destinations, and kids eat up a substantial amount of disposable income.

DINKS are way more likely to spend their vacation time somewhere more expensive and better.

I guess gophers are cuter than rats, so people will protest about their killing, but treat rats like a pest that needs to be exterminated ASAP.

You can see evidence of that in how insanely competitive it can be to get campsites in normal weekend driving range of Calgary, and in the proportion of RVs to tents now compared with 20-40 years ago. I think for a lot of people priced out of the cabin market, a deluxe RV is what a lot of them turn to as an alternative. I tent, and have had to start focusing as much as possible on places with "walk in" sites to put a little more distance between sleeping kids and generators/patio lights/etc.

Unequivocally, in relation to proximity, water body size, and mountain scenery, Kinbasket is the most unheralded, and underappreciated large lake to us. My buddy is the only one with a houseboat on it haha.

I can't believe the White House hasn't collapsed yet, let alone is still open.

And now you have the hobo encampment next door with the WOP pizza lunatic and all his freedom buddies.

That dude's a Freedom Muppet? haha. It's still in half complete disarray.
I wish the corner store across the street could sell booze.

The Family Pantry? It does and has for a while.

EDIT: realized you might be talking about something stronger than beer.

I don't see any evidence of the OPs premise that local vacation spots are less popular. My experience is that everything is busier. The result of which has seen an increase in prices.
