Absolutely agree. It is a pretty good example of how some fans overrate players on other teams and maybe underrate their own.

I would be shocked if Lindy (extension confirmed)+ 16 overall would be enough. A top 3 pick is almost a sure fire star player for the next decade + so the fact the Columbus beat writer claims a 2nd is all the Flames need it is nuts especially the Columbus guy stating it.

When it is all said and done I do think Columbus could be a team who aggressively pursues Lindholm and might want to take a run at both Lindholm and Hanifin.

Lindholm for Another Swedish center? Hell yes. And no, Smith doesn't go before Carlsson.

Imagine walking out of the 23 draft with 3 and 16. That's....instant rebuild stuff. Any one of the top 4 are NHL ready.

I don't see a sure fire star player at #3. I see a sure fire star player at #1 and a lot of maybes.

For 3rd overall I'd do Lindholm and Hanifin, and may as well give the 2nd rounder they so desire.

Michkov, Fantilli, Smith, and Benson all have 70%+ star likelihood based on hockeyprospecting.com model. Carlsson has elite SHL production for an 18 year old. Most years that is good enough for 1st overall.

If you can get a top 3 pick in this draft for Lindholm who doesn't want to re-sign here then you fly the paperwork to the NHL offices personally and don't trust that fax or email will get it done.

The Flames wouldn't though. The mandate is win now. That would cripple any chance of that. CBJ isn't doing that anyhow.

Not that I expect that trade to happen but 3rd overall isn't a sure fire star by any stretch. Lots of mediocrity there as well. This draft is hyped but Lindholm matches up with most of these players.

There are still plenty of top 3 first round picks in the history of the draft that never turned into stars. A lot of them

Forgot my green text. No chance any executive who wants to keep their job would deal the third overall. Flames plans be damned, you know Conroy would sell it to the highest person in the org if that were offered. It'd set the franchise up potentially the next decade.

Good point and funny enough the last 2 generational drafts like this one is being hyped as Dylan Strome and Nathan Horton were just alright but not sniffing the top 10 of a redraft.

Sure but if the ask is pending UFA Lindholm and a 2nd then I make that trade and take that risk every day of the week.

This isn't a normal draft. There are 5-6 guys that probably are 1st or 2nd overall picks in a normal year.

Well just speaking in hypotheticals the Flames make that trade and open up a lot of cap space. They get a NHL ready prospect at 3 overall and with the new round cap space would have assets like the 16th pick they could move to acquire another forward that would help win-now.

It is all talk for fun though as we know none of this would happen.

It’s funny looking at the list of 3rd overalls how many are just good players Vs stars

That suggestion from the CBJ reporter is a "Start the car" moment.

Assuming Fantilli is #2, who would you guys pick at #3 if this extremely unlikely scenario were to happen

I completely agree in principle. You'd be laughed off the site of you proposed that. But let's consider 3 things.

1. Portzline feels like one of those tapped in guys.

2. Jarmo may have a pretty solid sense that if he doesn't make the playoffs, he is fired. Lindholm helps him in a big way.

3. Jarmo has taken big dumb cuts on pending UFAs before and it kinda worked out for him. At least in Columbus where they saw that TB beat down like a cup win.

Strome was always a weird pick IMO, same with Drouin to some extent.

They were playing guys that looked like generational talents, of course he looked great too.

2003 draft is weird too...in that at the time im not sure it was looked at as a generational draft. Then all of a sudden 2-3 years later it was like "holy smokes there are a lot of good players in here"
