Marc Savard going from player who watched butterflies during practise to head coach in Calgary would be wild. Not that I'm against it but what a long arc that would be.

Tanguay was always a high IQ player, would love to see him back here.

If we didn't think The Flames were a boys club before...

Flames appear to be modeling their management group after the Lowe era Oilers.

Alex Tanguay is a interesting name.

Going from 1st in shot attempt to last would be something lol

Definitely an old boys club now. Having one qualified former Flame on staff is much, much different than the last 20 years where we’ve almost always had anywhere from 1-3 qualified former Flames on staff.

God, #OilersFail amirite?

We don't know that any of the rumours are true.

The OBC in Shelbyville is from the 1980s. Flames' OBC (if it exists) would at least be from this century and 20 years younger or so.

One can start with a coaching core who all know each other and is tight - that passes on to the team. Doesn't mean in has to stay that way forever. But the team BADLY needs that "togetherness" feeling RN.

He’s not going to move laterally. It would be Head Coach.

Literally zero of us have any idea what he's like as a person, or if he's qualified for this job.

Well, ok, that one section number named guy might.

The only appropriate reaction here is "cool, I hope this works out great!".

Brian Burke always talked about making a big move at the draft as his stamp on the team. Treliving made some major moves at the draft.

Wonder if Conroy will do the same.

Those guys got rewarded and promoted after failing at thier jobs. That's not what's happening here. I don't think that's a fair comparison at this point.

Jeff Marek and Elliot Friedman - Both Conroy and Iginla really respect Tanguay's offensive talent and coaching

Jeff Marek - I'd like to throw Marc Savard's name out as well

OMG OLD BOYS CLUB

I say bring it on. It's meant to be fun and that would be fun. People only say old boys club when it doesn't work out, but these are all legitimately qualified people who just happen to be old teammates/buddies, so maybe it will work out. Only person I've heard who wouldn't be a candidate anywhere else based on experience is Jarome. But it's Jarome, so you do it.

Need to have some people here that are actually proud to be here after being dumped 3 times in a row.

Incredible. We've gone from eye emoji to eyeroll in record time.

We’ve actually gone to nothing new, since no one has been hired yet.

Seems like the right choice. Likeable guy who has been mentored by Treliving. Hopefully has an idea of the vision Tre initially had but puts his own spin on it.

I understand the concerns about 'old boys club' but people also have to stand back and take a look at the trend in sports.

Gone are the days of 'players' and 'coaches' being an entirely separate pipeline. More and more ex-players are transitioning into coaching and management, and it's the trend that over time they'll be the majority of candidates. As always, you have to sift through and find the good ones and that's no different than if you were interviewing only 'non-player' candidates.

Edmonton's big problem was not that they took a gamble with an ex-player, but rather that they doubled down despite terrible, league-worst results. And also because they're NG.
