His dad is a police officer was an intern at some point and yes his grandfather coached the team in like the 60s before they were in the ohl. That's like saying I have an in with the company my grandfather worked in before I was born.
It's not like either of them were in any position of power to land him a gm job 10 years ago or become an agent at 19 or whatever.

People hate when young people have drive and accomplish something early in life.

Family was friends with the Greyhounds management. Dude had an in. Not a random off the street. And it's SSM - not a big town.
Not saying he didn't work hard, but to pretend there isn't family connections with the org is laughable at best. It's like saying the Iginla kids have no connection to the Flames or Bruins organization.

Ozy.. Come on now. Even if we agree with your argument... Having an in doesn't typically lead to a team hiring you to an executive. I can get a kid i know an entry level position at my company, I can't get my 22 year old cousin hired as ceo.

Meh. I can't say with any certainty whether the connections helped, but there have certainly been a lot of GMs of major junior teams that weren't qualified for the job in any way, shape or form.
The Niagara IceDogs previously had their GM be the son of their owners, and the coach be the other son. They had to sell the team because of some damaging text messages, and now the new GM (under new ownership) is now suspended for some shady stuff.
Mark Hunter had no GM or front office experience when he became GM of the Knights, either. He had coached the Sarnia Sting, and he and Dale and Basil McRae bought the Knights and took over operation. It's turned out well, but he certainly didn't have any relevant experience.

I don't think Dubas walked in off the street and convinced the SSM Greyhounds to make him GM, especially at age 25, fresh out of school. Who is this, Robert California?
He interviewed for the job and got it, but the org - knowing his family with long history with the organization - obviously had trust in this guy that ran well back before Dubas applied for it.
He is a hard-working dude, but lets not pretend that nepotism wasn't an angle here. Because it most certainly was to put him in a favorable position to get the job.
I mean, from an article about his relationship with the franchise:
The pressure hardly took Dubas by surprise. Born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, his family's past is intertwined with the franchise. His father is a former Greyhounds intern and his grandfather Walter coached the team from 1960-67, working at the Algoma Steel plant by day and stepping behind the bench at night.
I have a background in HR. Getting family and friends into positions isn't as uncommon as you would think. Look at O/G in the mid-2000s - perfect example.

I don't think anybody is disputing this, at all. Getting started is easier for some people than others. But once you're 'in', you've still got to play the game really well to advance.
A nepotistic hire that never ever advances is far more likely evidence of being unqualified...the nepotism may be the only thing keeping them around because a firing is too uncomfortable based on connections.

The Toronto Maple Leafs' decision not to retain general manager Kyle Dubas caught many in the hockey world by surprise on Friday, but according to a report from James Mirtle of The Athletic Dubas and team president Brendan Shanahan had been “at odds” for a while.
Multiple sources confirmed to The Athletic a pattern of issues between Shanahan and Dubas that developed over several seasons, including the Maple Leafs president stepping in and blocking transactions as well as dictating other moves the former GM didn’t always agree with.
"It’s likely Dubas was told then Keefe would (or should be) a casualty during an offseason that all involved agreed required significant change."
“There is also a view in the organization that players have become too comfortable, which will likely feed into whatever organizational decisions are made this summer. Part of what was an issue with the board was whether Dubas was prepared to make those hard decisions, such as firing a coach he was very close with and trading players he had backed ever since they entered the league seven seasons ago."

Sounds familiar.

I look forward to Treliving becoming the Leafs GM
That would be a glorious day
The guy knows more about pizza than hockey talent.
The Panthers should give him an honorary ring if they win the cup. He helped built them.

I'm not too bent out of shape on the trades themselves. Treliving did well under the circumstances. Where I'm annoyed is while these guys were on the Flames they didn't have the proper support system to help their growth. That was a theme during Treliving's days and part of me thinks he kept himself in his office and separated himself from the players to let the coach coach. I theorize there wasn't a proper channel to outlet concerns to him directly.

Yeah our 2 best and highest picked players in their prime are playing for another team. That’s the problem.
What we got back maybe ok in value at the time but now we are stuck overpaying for underperforming older guys

In no way, shape or form was Bennett ever one of the two best Flames.

Except he said "best and highest picked". That has to mean Bennett and Tkachuk.
Or else he's just bad at expressing what he means, which is possible.

I suspect it's the hyperbole that goes with trying to make things seem as bad as possible.
I actually see trading Bennett as the result of more unforced error than having to trade Tkachuk, and I was never even a Bennett fan.

The Toronto situation is getting good. I gotta say now that the shoe is on the other foot I can see why fans of other teams made fun of us last summer. This is very entertaining
