The four candidates are Houston, Salt Lake City, Kansas City and Sacramento. The problem is, Houston, Salt Lake City and Quebec City want expansion franchises, not relocated ones. Which begs the question, is the NHL really expanding? There is no league that has more than 32 teams, heck MLB and NBA can't even get past 30. The NFL last expanded to 32 team in 2002. The NFL is a league that could have 50 teams and even they are hesitant. What makes the NHL think it can dilute it's awful product even more?

lol what? Quit believing right wing propaganda. The highest valued NBA team plays in San Francisco and a top 10 NFL franchise plays in San Francisco. Its too close to San Jose - but they would move in there in a approximately a milli-second with all the money in that area.

I am pretty sure QC would take whatever they can get to be back in the game.

I'm tired of the expansion talk. I get that they'd happily take the absurd expansion fees, but enough is enough ... 32 teams with four 8 team divisions is perfect. The NFL has 32 as well, the NBA has 30. Not like the NHL is so special they need to be the ones to push beyond that.

Well the NHL can support 7 teams in Canada, the other leagues cannot. That's why 36 teams isn't totally out of the question.

The Coyotes are going nowhere. They're like Michael Myers, you think he's dead and he shows up again in another ####ty movie come October.

Absolutely nothing magic about 32 teams. If there are billionaires willing to pony up, the league will keep growing.

Just have to correct you on the NFL statement....The 49ers play in Santa Clara which is basically San Jose.

San Francisco proper and Santa Clara might as well be on different planets from a market point of view.
I’ve been placing retail and fitness businesses in the Bay Area for the past 18 years, and believe that an NHL team in SF would be a colossal failure.
Maybe if the had an arena in Downtown Oakland, but even then, I think they’d struggle.

Why?
People don’t drive multiple hours to go watch a NHL game (well, I bet 99.9999% don’t anyway). People in Houston aren’t driving to Dallas, Salt Lake City driving to Denver, or Portland driving to Seattle. There’s a ton of markets to go exploit and make money from. I don’t really get the reticence to avoid expansion or growth personally (from an ownership perspective) other than the point that every market you expand into is one less market you can threaten taxpayers with relocation to fund new arenas.
Further, I think watering down the talent actually makes the product better (more mistakes leads to more exciting hockey).

28 in the US, 8 in Canada? It doesn't seem too far fetched.

Southern Ave has been restricted and narrowed to make the area more approachable for foot traffic, so that's a traffic choke point. There is potential for an entertainment district around a proposed building as most of the businesses have gone toes up as the mall died and lots of pads are available on the north, east, and a few on the west of the property. Hotels are close, but nothing high end. Will be interested to see what Maricopa Community Colleges (Mesa Community College) would have to say, being on the edge of that location and them having interest in that property in the past. Some challenges in the site and some real ugly politics involved but could work.
