Damn I hate this 2-3-2 format, why can't they just go 2-2-1-1-1?

It's been a fascinating series and a see saw battle.
Easily the most invested i've been in an outcome in the american league.
Wolf and the baby Flames successfully overcoming the Seattle system's team that is loaded with top talent and was just injected with more would be something.
Hope this ride keeps going!
Hearing how even keel Mitch Love came off on the radio the morning after that exhaustive triple OT loss, it's making more and more sense to me why he's won coach of the year back to back. He left me feeling hopeful after what should have been a deflating swing game loss.

That game could have ended 7-5, the goalies were incredible. Wolf picked the best time to show why he's the MVP.
Phillips with some huge defensive plays at the end.

For those curious, there is a pretty good breakdown of how the AHL playoffs work on a post regarding the Texas Stars (not super recent, but still very relevant):
http://www.100degreehockey.com/p/faqglossary.html
You have to scroll down a ways on this page, but here is an excerpt:
AHL Playoff Format
Due to travel costs, teams meeting in the playoffs that are further than 300 highway miles apart play seven game series in a 2-3-2 format. This means that two games are played at the home arena of the higher seeded team, followed by three straight at the lower seeded team and closing with two at the higher seed, if necessary. Teams that are close still play the traditional 2-2-1-1-1 format of the NHL and MLB.
In 2011-12, the league changed the length of all opening round series to five games instead of seven. This had no change for 'close' teams. They simply changed to a 2-2-1 format. For teams that would have played 2-3-2 format, this meant a big change.
In order to guarantee that every team in the playoffs gets at least one home game, the series cannot go 3-2 because it is possible for one team to sweep and never make it to the lower seeded teams' home arena. Instead, teams play a 2-3 format, where the higher seeded team comes home for games 3, 4 and 5. This means that the higher seeded team could be facing elimination coming home for their first home game.
Hope this helps. Let's Go Wranglers!

As the higher seed, I love the 2-3-2, there’s a higher probability that the series will be decided in 6 or 7 than 5.
It guarantees that the higher seed has home ice advantage in a potential series clinching game, when game 5 isn’t always.
As the lower seed, 2-3-2 sucks. But that’s the perk of winning the regular season.

Isn't it a best of 5 though? There can't be a Game 6 or 7.

Next series if they advance is best of 7.
Round 1- Best of 3 (Wranglers had bye)
Round 2 - Best of 5
Round 3 - Best of 5
Round 4 - Best of 7
Championship Final - Best of 7

If you split the first four games, now the team without home ice/court gets game 5 at home and almost forces the home advantage team to win on the road when home advantage should not allow that to happen. All the momentum is in favor of the team who finished with the worse record. Now even though in the 2–3–2 style, games 6 & 7 are at home, if you lose game 5 on the road you are now forced to win both games 6 & 7 in order to win. It basically strips home advantage from the team who earned it.

I also love how it was described as being a tap in past Wolf. He was there. All that stick saved was a save.

Dustin was in the zone ...wow....post to post that kid is incredible. I sure hope Dustin's back is strong when he comes to the flames because he'll be carrying the team on his back just like Kipper did back in the day.
Gotta love the Wranglers heart and Mitch Love has to be darn proud. Fingers crossed they win the next close it out and we get to see a Calder Cup Final here.
If this happens I hope the dome sees 12 to 14 thousand fans.
Go Wranglers

Meanwhile, on the other side of the AHL, the Eastern Final is already set as both Division Finals were sweeps. Hershey defeated Hartford, and Toronto followed their parent club's lead, losing 3 straight despite having home ice advantage against Rochester.
Hershey and Rochester start the Eastern Conference Final on Tuesday, which likely means the Western Final will start on Wednesday (hopefully at the Saddledome).
