Because it works with an arena in the proper location.
Put the rink where Mesa allowed the Cubs to build their spring training facility and we aren't having this conversation.

Problem is SF and Oakland have become real disasters since COVID, with terrible conditions everywhere and major corporations moving out and not in. Doesn't seem to be a place that would be ideal to place a sports franchise.

I think it may have worked if they'd started that way. I wonder if they're too far gone now.

Possibly?
I think Merulo revisits the Salt River option to see if the math works. If not, they will move.

Played golf with a guy from Tempe today and asked him his thoughts on the vote yesterday. His response: 'what vote?'

Thing is, you could probably get the same thing about the upcoming provincial election from some people.

Move the Coyotes to Mexico City for all I care. I only need the Calgary Flames in my life!

Yeah, at this point, the best thing for Phoenix as a hockey market is probably just to move out the Coyotes and try again in a decade or so.

Move this joke of a franchise.
I get it, grow the game blah blah, but a lot of sales would be generated by for example Quebec. It would create intense rivalries which could pull in more viewers and also, the jersey sales would be nuts.

Same as the Flames!
Although I guess with the current wildfires, at least you can see some relevance.

Portland Coyotes, with some reimagined branding.

That seems to be an “NBA thing” so many teams have moved and not changed names. Atlanta, Memphis, LA just to name a few. I wonder why that is.

Not just NBA
Flames
Dodgers
Rams
Cardinals
Braves
Raiders
Jazz is kind of weird though.

Keeping the same name is rarest in the NHL. Only the Flames and Stars kept the same name after moving and both of them still made sense in their new homes.
The New Jersey Rockies, Colorado Nordiques, or Carolina Whalers would have been approaching Utah Jazz levels of WTF.

The Stars only kept part of the name as North Stars made less sense in Dallas.

Heyo, loyal Jazz and Flames fan here. Can't disagree it's an absurd name and the reason they never bothered changing from Jazz is that they didnt think they'd last, hence why they drafted Dominique Wilkins and traded him to Atlanta for cash.
Got a new owner mid 80s, stabilized the franchise, and now it's institution with beloved history, at least among the locals.
Seeing the Golden Eagles as Flames farm team as a kid made me loyal to Calgary. First game I went to Theo Fleury was playing, so fun to see this little ball of energy up and down the ice.
So, if SLC ever got an NHL team, I'd be conflicted. Lifetime as Flames fan vs local team down the road.
Thanks for letting me ramble. It beats working.
