The fact in all of this is that the players respected Sutter -they never quit. I want to believe that deep down Backlund knew what Sutter wanted for him was for the best and it showed. Whatever he did worked because Backlund was probably as consistent as he has ever been this year.
Will a guy like Mitch Love be able to command this veteran room? Only time will tell.
I'd rather have a guy push buttons then hand the boys a beer (GG) and say it will be alright, lets just "watch some more video".

Clearly they didn't respect him or they wouldn't have demanded his removal. This goes for the whole organization and not just the players.

This is playing out in industries across the continent and many are struggling with the cultural change. Those that evolve and adapt to the new workforce will find greater success. I hope the Flames acknowledge this shift and brings in a GM and coaching staff that understand the change in approach.

I totally agree. Not sure how work from home is going to play out though.

This isn't directed at you, but there are often comments on here implying that there are only two types of coaches: tough, button pushers like Sutter, or soft, 'player's coaches' like Gulutzan. But there is a giant amount of grey in between those two extremes. It is possible to command the players' respect without being a complete asshat

Trevor Lewis was a big fan of Darryl:
https://dailyhive.com/calgary/lewis-...s-coach-sutter
“He’s such a good coach for me. I’ve obviously played my best hockey for him. I think he got the most out of me,” Lewis explained. “Even off the ice, anything I ever needed, I could call him and he’d do it at the drop of a hat. I think he’d do that for mostly anyone too, he’s just such a family person. If you played for him, I think he’d do anything for you for the rest of your life.”
“One game, I think it was the first time my wife ever met him, we just lost and I didn’t play very good, and I’m like, ‘Tomorrow’s going to suck, Darryl’s going to give it to me,'” said Lewis. “I walk out of the room after the game, and he’s hugging my wife, and my wife goes, ‘What are you guys talking about? This guy is the nicest guy I’ve ever met.'”

Nobody said he wasn't a decent person, just a dick of a coach.
But even the biggest #######s have people that get along with them, so this means nothing.
To me the story is the coaching equivalent of a guy saying he isn't racist because he has a black friend.

The year before, Sutter saved the Flames, we are lucky to have such a great coach. One of the best ever.
The year later from the same people. Nobody respected Sutter. He is an #######, nobody like him. Worst coach ever.
Anyway , the difference is a couple new players that played like #### and acted worse. And a goalie that is a mental midget.

So one of his guys just like Toffoli and Lucic come and out say hes a great coach. We have heard that the whole time that was the reason Lewis came here anyways.
Getting along with your pluggers is great but you need to get along with the top end of the roster to make this thing go.

Toffoli
One heck of a plugger that guy. Led the team in goals and points.

I was actually going to put in excluding Toffoli but you wouldn't have something to whine about like you usually do and add nothing to the conversations.
Not All in good time or whatever their name is up next.

Not sure why you're always so bothered with responses to your posts. That's what a discussion forum is. Keep trotting out the same stuff over and over, and the elementary reactions.

Because you're trying to be a bully. I would say if you go back and take a look elementary reactions would be what you are all about.

A bully for countering what you wrote with facts.
Delusion.

Sutter and Treliving are both long gone and it’s time to look ahead to the future.
However
One thing about this whole discussion sticks out like a sore thumb to me.
What do Lucic, Lewis and Toffoli have in common that Backlund, Huberdeau and Lindholm do not?
Hint, the answer is not “having fun”.

I don’t know about that. Rhett Warrener predicted Sutter would become unbearable after winning the Jack Adams trophy. That seems to be what happened, he become uncompromising- his way or the highway.
So, Sutter changed. Therefore why shouldn’t people’s opinion of him change too?

And you need the results.
His style isn't easy to play, but if you're racking up wins you see the process is working. Find a way to lose games when out playing everyone and the desire to play a tough style wanes.

My face is a bum!

I still find it interesting that our team looked the most offensively dangerous (including the power play) the first couple weeks of the season. Now it makes me wonder if it was the new guys playing like they were used to until Sutter beat it out of them.
