Its not. I think they budgeted for cost overruns but honestly?

They announced this before an election, if the UCP arent elected I'm not sure its going to hold...and thats probably the point.

It's interesting to note the NDP released their "costed" platform for the election on Tuesday and it includes tentative line items for the Calgary arena deal and matching funds for Edmonton.

Citation needed. It is illegal for non-Alberta residents to contribute to election campaigns in Alberta.

Those are the things that are secret right now but will come out over time.
The city owns the building, and can't charge tax to themselves, so even under a triple net lease the tax would be zero.

Also, by inference if they expected to receive property tax revenue from the building they would have announced that at the press conference to help deter the obvious complaints that the deal was way worse for the gov't than previously.

CSEC is an Alberta company. If you are talking about Edwards personally sure, but there are other local owners.

Can't you vote for either party for the Arena deal, NDP even has it as a line item in the budget. And nothing is officially signed with either party, so it can go poof either way.

I was going to ask this actually, I figured it was UCP means a better a chance at the arena? Or is that not the case?

The bulk of the bending over for the arena is by the city. The province is chipping in for some infrastructure tidbits, city council gave away all of our money.

The whole "vote for the arena" was a ploy to manipulate us for the election. Let's show them we're smarter than that and vote the way we were going to anyways.

For me, I won't worry about the arena. I'll worry about my parents getting healthcare and my kids getting educated in a class of less than 40 kids.

Either way, I think the arena deal gets done, but neither side is 100% certain since it still has to pass the cabinet.

The fact that it's framed as infrastructure money from the province makes it more palatable for the NDP to be able to okay it because that infrastructure work needs to be done regardless of what's built in the area.

Once the NDP put out their budget plan and it had the arena costs penciled in, I think it killed any chance this was going to be a wedge issue for the election.

I also believe it's a bad idea to try to make it a wedge issue since it's not something that falls along clear party lines, so it's just as likely to push someone to vote for the other side as it is to make them vote for you. Look at the last deal, the two biggest voices against the deal on Council were Farkas and Farrell, who were as far apart on the political spectrum as you're going to find in municipal politics.

Not really arena related specifically to the Flames, but Canadian sports betting did a ranking on the NHL arenas.

Quote:
The ranking by CanadaSportsBetting rated arenas on: the average price of an ounce of beer; proximity to public transit; proximity to an external restaurant; and availability of dedicated on-site parking
Not likely that the will stay at the top in terms of beer prices when the new arena is completed. In terms of proximity for transit and restaurants, it should be a lot better. I did no expect the Islanders to be so low in the rankings considering they just opened up that arena.

Farkas and Farrell are both pretty strong in their convictions types also though. Neither would go along with a bad deal just to get it done/get along.

That and the Scotiabank Arena being in San Jose California and the home of the Toronto Maple Leafs made me wonder too.
