No doubt. For that price point I'd go for this absolute beast of a domicile:

For $2 million get a nice house in Calgary and a nice place in Canmore. Dumping it all into a gaudy and embarrassing mcmansion is a total goofball move.

That house is tacky as ####. I'd be embarrassed to have people walk in to that staircase. The wish.com neoclassical exterior is brutal too.
The fact that I even have to laugh that there's a fern leaf in the pediment says something on it's own.

I would buy this place just for the laughs.

Obviously it doesn't make sense to move into a situation where you're house poor/can't afford your mortgage, but I don't think this is a bad time to move. If you buy and sell at approx the same time you aren't really speculating on current prices lasting, you're just locking in a place to live for the long term.

Also consider the costs and work associated with a bungalow over a condo. While you save on condo fees you most certainly have a larger repair and maintenance budget to cover when things like hot water tanks, roofs, furnaces, etc. go.

Agreed. If I had a couple million to burn on real estate I would keep my house in Calgary and buy a vacation/weekend property rather than buying a single oversized house in Calgary.

The style is Greco-roman meets Pauly Shore. I like how there is a third staircase just 15 feet away from the massive twinned spiral staircases because a successful business man needs options.
Bonus points for the rooftop parkade to park all 4 of your mercedes B class.

My best friend lives only a few doors down, and the stories of his neighbours and the saga of this build have been hilarious. Yes, the people are super pissed and the added issue of overpaying for this house to the tune of $750K minimum is that your neighbours will automatically hate your guts.
The price is ludicrous and I have no idea what these people are thinking, and this price has already been reduced substantially. Lake access over this 1,000,000x over. Like, $2MM? Smoking crack.

Yeah or knock it down.
Other thing that is going down in LB and which will undoubtedly suck, beyond the extensive swingers situation, is that the Promenade is being contemplated to go through a massive tear-down / rebuild that will be larger / bigger, include "trendy" new shops... barf.

Do you have any details or just rumours? Nothing has been posted on the Facebook group by the chronic complainers yet. I want it to happen purely for the entertainment value of the Facebook group.

I don’t think it’s a for sure thing, and my friend was working on a project for the development company via a MBA program related to how they could do it and concepts around what type of shops they could put into it, etc. likely not totally ironed out yet.
IMO though, that’s a brutal outcome. Leaving the Promenade and charm of it in connection to the lake etc. would be better. Not everything needs to be knocked down and modernized just so some schmuck can make a couple million bucks. You can see where it’s headed now and aside from the highly annoying construction that will take 3 years, the community will be worse off with it than without it.

Anyone that was around in the late 80s/early 90s in Calgary would also remember this place sitting at framing stage for years. In the elements; rain, snow, sun, repeat... for years. That house should be land value - adjacent to 14th nonetheless - at best.

Yeah, I kinda love that wacky little promenade. Especially that weird dude that runs the lottery booth that made himself a Magneto-style prison cell just outside of Safeway. He runs the strangest hours, too. Like, what are you doing sitting in there at 8pm on a random weeknight? And how is that even a reasonable business when you can just grab a lotto ticket at Circle K.
Jeans Addiction rules, though.

That whole neighbourhood is weird AF. Terrible location and ugly houses with crap landscaping. Its existence makes no sense. Just seems like homes all the weirdo characters from Grand Theft Auto would live in. I feel like if I walk through there I'll get embroiled in some crazy heist or have to beat up a hooker or something.

We looked at about 12 homes in Pump Hill before settling on Bonavista. There are some strange places there. Lots are all weird sizes and there are all kinds of "hidden" houses tucked behind cul-de-sacs with non-descript driveways.
