I wouldn't assume that, no one was calling it a safety issue.

In any case, I'm sure these legal issues didn't help with the vote. This ownership group seems to like to fire from the hip and air its laundry in public instead of trying to settle things like serious business people. Hard to blame Tempe voters for not trusting many of the representations made. The airport issue was well known from a similar proposal twenty years ago.

Will the Yotes move this off season or will we get a couple years of Oakland A’s like no attendance while they wait for a new home?

Fertitta will be interested if he thinks he can get a discount.

An NHL team gives him some more dates in his arena but I honestly don't know if he is that interested in the NHL. At least not $1 billion interested.

Thrashers to WPG was announced in late May, so it's possible. It's interesting that there is another franchise bidding process happening right now and there will be unsuccessful bidders there...

From Seravalli today: https://www.dailyfaceoff.com/news/te...ona-on-tuesday

But if there isn’t a new permanent home in Arizona on the horizon and the Coyotes have to go back to the drawing board? The NHL and its Board of Governors, having exhausted all possible efforts, will likely have no choice but to pull up stakes and relocate the franchise. There is a reason the NHL has continued to take meetings with prospective owners in Houston, Salt Lake City, Kansas City and elsewhere – all of which would fit well as locations for a Central Division franchise. Because other owners are fed up with the Coyotes’ relative suck on revenue compared to other generating clubs and players are not happy playing in an NCAA arena. Really, it seems more like a question of ‘when’ and ‘where,’ not ‘if’ the Coyotes would relocate, if the project were to be killed. There is zero doubt that Bettman and the NHL have mapped out a game plan behind the scenes, even though they’re cautiously optimistic and hoping for the best for a franchise they have backed at every turn – some would say against all logic. Is it possible that the Coyotes could be playing somewhere else as soon as next season? That seems far fetched. But if the vote is indeed ‘no,’ it cannot be completely ruled out. On a factual basis, there is still time to pull it off. Bettman didn’t announce until May 31, 2011 that the Atlanta Thrashers had been sold to Winnipeg-based True North Sports and Entertainment and the team would relocate for the very next season.
With the Thrashers, there were rumblings of a move being in the works for a while, but it wasn't officially announced until the end of May. I believe the Flames move was also a late-May announcement, but had also been in the works for a while.

I guess it depends if there has been a contingency plan in the works in case of this outcome. It seems likely they'll have at least one more season at the Mullett, but even a small rink like San Diego would be more than double the capacity of ASU, so even a temporary move to anywhere bigger could be a good idea.

Move Detroit back to the Western Conference where they belong and move the Yotes to QC. Those people have waited long enough to get their team back.

And why do they belong in the west? Because that's where you want them?

Either QC or Austin TX.

I am positive Austin is a better fit than Houston. Similar to Nashville or Vegas, it is a medium sized, growing city, with no professional sport team in the big 4. NHL seems to thrive in these outlets.

They could operate out of the 9k seat AHL rink until a new arena is built.

Save Houston for a future expansion.

Agreed. They're like a half hour flight from Toronto. No way should Detroit ever be in the West again. Even Nashville and Chicago feels like it's pushing the "West" defintion.

The Titans were ahead of the Preds in Nashville for a year. And of course Vegas now has NFL as well, though obviously the Knights have a great foothold.

If you want Detroit to agree to a move back west you probably need to give them like half the relocation fee. They aren't going to want to do that, and since it doesn't make geographic sense they'd have a strong case.

No, because geographically they should be in the West? Actually the Central specifically. They were in the West before, they were moved for Conference balancing reasons. No reason at all they can't be moved back for the same reason.

They have no case. Where does it say that any team can determine on what Conference/Division they get to play in? That is a league decision, not a team decision. The team doesn't get a say in that.

Toronto used to be the west too.

It seems like now, it's more about time zones than anything else. Being a team in the eastern time zone would suck for them if they had to play most of their games in the west. Not to mention, the added travel costs for that team.

They don't get a say but they certainly can push. Detroit likes its rivalries out east. They like Ontario residents coming in for Leaf games.

Columbus is closer to the Central teams than Detroit is.
