Pretty sure once s*** hits the fan and most of the worlds major cities are destroyed in the nuclear holocaust of WW3 we'll be getting lots of exercise, so there is that.

Also very much disagree on this. I used to travel to the Southern US a lot for work and obesity is on another level there. The States with the poorest health outcomes are basically over lapped with the most obese States. These aren’t people packing an extra 20lbs. Now there are complex reasons for amount of obesity in these States and obese people aren’t lesser but no amount of lobbying is simply labeling obese people unhealthy and you are hand waving the problem away.

https://www.cdc.gov/obesity/data/prevalence-maps.html

Also, I assume this is the study you are talking about. It even discusses the limitations.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/a...u-live-longer/
That's not fair. Don't lump in the south with everyone else. They deep fry everything then cover it in gravy and pair it with a buttery biscuit. It's like they want to die, and if you've seen the way most of them live, you'd understand why.

Are you saying they would have benefitted from exercise mandated by the government?

I like having "fatties" around, it's how I tell I'm doing okay and am in fairly good shape.
I do know quite a few people that just didn't grow up exercising (even at a moderate level) and lack a basic understanding of how to work out and for what duration to see results

Wean people off their goddam cars. Making walking and cycling an ordinary part of life. You think the gorgeous Spanish are hitting Crossfit classes every other hour? No, they just walk everywhere.

If only people were open to changing their North American way of life (starting by substituting some car rides for bicycle trips) but they are not, at all.

In fairness walking in Spain in the middle of February is different than walking in Calgary in the middle of February.

Although, I think it is getting better.

I can walk to the following in 20 mins from my front door:

Hospital
restaurants
pubs
movie theatre
grocery / booze /drug stores

It's always amazed me how hard it is to get good health & fitness info: The information available is either based around selling a product or buried within terminology you need a PhD to navigate; Govt nutritional info is heavily impacted by lobbyists (ie: the food pyramid & canada's food guide are both trash); Health & Fitness magazines mostly provide piecemeal info with little context.

The podcast age has done wonders to improve the amount of quality fitness information available. All the best health and fitness info I've ever gotten I found on a podcast or eventually made it's way to a podcast. Health & fitness stuff is always complex and podcasts provide the best format for contextualizing these concepts. The kind of info I'd have killed for 10-20 years ago is readily available now.

Yeah, if you can do it, walk to your nearest grocery store and do it more often. Don’t always need to do a weekly trip. We’re about 2km from our nearest Coop, so we can just walk or bike and grab a few items as needed.

And how do you know that info is trustworthy, or even safe?

Its always a gamble, and it always comes down to trial and error due to individual variance. If you can find a host that gets good guests, asks good questions and is knowledgeable enough to contextualize the info, your already more than a head and shoulders above traditional sources.

On a few occasions ive brought some of the concepts ive had success with to actual medical doctors, they would provide some more context but have always largely agreed with my findings and interpretations.

I walk a couple of blocks everyday to get my morning coffee. I always shake my head when other co-workers drive two blocks to go through the drive through regardless of the weather. I think banning drive-throughs wouldn't be the worst thing ever for people and the planet.

The amount of times you see people drive distances that should be walkable to 80% of the population (anything under 2km IMO) is just mind-blowing.

You mean from the side parking area of the power centre to the middle area? Then maybe the other side? "But I have things to carry!"
