I’m sure CHED was great, but you could build a wall of shame from CP alone. A tidy little reminder that, as always, Edmonton is No Good.

Yeah the amount of panic about who was going to take care of the Oilers was unbearable. The answer always is that the Oilers will do more to make sure they don't win than the other teams in the playoffs.

I think the Knights are pretty underrated around these parts. They are a really good hockey team and Cassidy is a really good head coach when he's still in his shelf life.

Anyone remember when those two loser Soiler fans chased Backlund and Mangiapane last year.
I hope they paid good money to watch the oilers soil themselves

The thing with Vegas is that they have way more cap efficient contracts than do the Flames:
Marchessault makes 5 mill
Smith makes 5 mill
Stephenson makes 2.75 mill
Theodore makes 5.2 mill
Thompson makes 0.77 mill
They don't really have any bad contracts.

To the Flames fan posters here who were predicting the Oilers going straight to the final and wining the cup, was it just mental preparation for the absolute worst outcome? Can you explain what was going on in your heads to express such disgusting thoughts?

Given the year Flames fans have had, it would have been the natural cherry-on-top.
I assure you, the elation to go from thinking the Oilers are going to win the cup, to seeing them out in the 2nd round, is the best I've felt since game 1 of round 2 last year.

2016 - Missed playoffs

2018 - Missed playoffs
2019 - Missed playoffs
2020 - Lost qualifying round (won 0 rounds)
2021 - Lost first round (won 0 rounds)
2022 - Lost conference final (won 2 rounds and were swept in the conference final)
2023 - Lost conference semi final (won one round)
That's 8 seasons of lessons now Connor. You all must be slow learners.

The Oiler fan base still think the NHL is going to adapt to McDavid rather than McDavid adapting to playoff hockey. If he wants to be more effective in the playoffs, he needs to adapt his game he plays in the playoffs. Averaging 1.5 goals per game 5v5 as a team isn't going to win you much. They were way to dependent on the PP and their entire game plan revolved around that to the point that they started to flop pretty bad.
They mentioned on the panel that GMs and players have commented on how diving is creeping back in. Will be interesting to see if they dust off the old public shaming of divers with fines and suspensions.

I saw a more clear path to the finals with opposition they should be able to beat.
And a deadly powerplay with a willingness to flop to draw more PPs.
Glad that the series wasn't decided 5 on 4.
When you have the league's two best offensive players you are always dangerous.
McDavid is a cheat code. It's quite befuddling that they can't generate more 5 on 5

Eichel is sure doing pretty good for someone who was washed up and we should have never wanted to have on the Flames.

It seemed like a really weak year and everything setting up for Edmonton to put a cherry on the top for a disastrous last year for us.
Thank you Vegas. I shall cheer you on for the remainder of these great playoffs.

I think you forgot that Edmonton is no good.
The hockey gods could line up the perfect path to the Cup, and they might have done that, but never make the mistake of discounting Edmonton’s ability to be Edmonton.
I’ve been told it’s something in the water.

This made me wonder about how long it took other superstars to learn. Connor is taking a while, but not yet the longest.
Gretzky - 4 seasons of lessons (Messier can be here too)
Lemieux - 6
Yzerman - 13
Sakic - 7
Jagr - 0
Crosby - 3
Ovechkin - 12
Kane - 2
Some very notable Cup champs there. Yzerman and Ovechkin certainly took forever to win but the others were much quicker than what McDavid is doing. I believe that McDavid would fit into the situation of players like Ron Francis, Ray Bourque, Brett Hull etc. They couldn't win but one their 1st or 2nd year on a new team. I honestly believe that McDavid will win a cup just as quickly after he leaves the Oilers. It won't take him long to learn how to win. He's slowly figuring it out on his own but playing for a franchise that thinks "Just put out Connor and Leon and we'll win" is a solid tactic then he's SOL.

Think for me a lot of it was mental preparation for the worst outcome...and now that they are eliminated it feels even better.
Also I saw what looked like their best chance to win a Cup. There were no real powers in the West, goaltending in the West is a gongshow this season, they were on a major hot streak to end the season, and even the East opened up a lot with Tampa/Boston losing.
Them blowing it though is amazing.

It just felt like everything was setting up for the unthinkable to happen.
Jake Oettinger looking like a human all of a sudden, Seattle having a fairytale run the injuries to Vegas and the 4th string goalie.
Out east Toronto Tampa and Boston out.
Them blowing it makes that much sweeter.

Powerplay Quarterback

I think, until #97 become effective player in all 3 zones and make an average 2 wingers with low cap into the first line wingers the Oilers will be the pretender at best.
In ideal world like Kostin-McReferee-Yamamoto should be their 1st line who out play other team's first line and other their top players distributed to make strong team.

Connor won't change his game, because nobody has the balls to have that talk with him. He was below average in the playoffs at even strength, and had the same old fly the zone habits. There are no Bowman style coaches that will sit a 12.5 million dollar offensive player down and say "Look Fnuts, you need to round your game out to win". It ain't gonna happen.
And what Oiler fans should be worried about is he's entering that late 20's time of his career, where he suddenly wakes up a fraction slower, with his hands a fraction slower. He can't fall back on at least I'm ok defensively.
He's one injury from trying to slam a basket ball in a basketball court with a 6 foot ceiling away from having all of those hits and bumps and bruises and wreckless style from catching up to him.

It just seemed like a fairly easy path this year. Didn't seem like any team would have the goaltending needed to take them out. Last year the AVs had a stacked team that could beat the Oilers even without amazing goaltending, but this year there didn't seem to be any teams like that.
Even Vegas with their goaltending, I thought they were going to get run over. I definitely underrated their team.
