He moved off the notion of pure skill to try and win it and brought in some grinders. The problem was the grinders didn't do their job. I'm looking at O'Reilly, specifically.

Well sure, the Leafs problem has been the core guys haven't delivered when the pressure is on, and the depth guys haven't stepped up either.
But who is the guy going out and getting those depth players? O'Reilly was having a terrible season to begin with. But because the Leafs are so cash-strapped, they have to go out and get bargain guys or give up extra assets for retained space.

Come on Maloney! Hire from within! Lets get this wrapped up way before the draft.

If he wanted to be a GM elsewhere it would have happened already, probably at a bigger club than the Flames.

How about Kris Draper? Since become director of scouting for the Wings they have made some very good picks in Seider/Raymond and Edvinsson/Kasper look to be solid picks as well. Has spent a lot of time in the front office and he may be ready for the next step.

Soderblom and Mazur as well look like decent picks for where they were taken.

An ESPN article mentions Craig Conroy, Mark Hunter and Shane Doan as candidates for the Flames GM job:
"Obviously, the Flames aren't going to hire a coach until they hire a general manager. The candidates for the latter job range from current Calgary assistant GM Craig Conroy to the OHL's London Knights
GM Mark Hunter -- the runner-up to Kyle Dubas for the Toronto Maple Leafs' job -- to Arizona Coyotes' chief development officer Shane Doan, who has history with Maloney with Arizona."

I realize that he is originally from Alberta, but Doan just seems so entrenched with the Coyotes, it would be weird to see him working anywhere else. Of course, only 32 jobs and far fewer than that available in any given year. And if Yzerman could cut his teeth with Tampa, I guess it isn't too far-fetched.

But Yzerman played for the Wings though.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Doan refused to be traded to a cup Contender so he could stay in Arizona. Multiple times. I doubt he leaves the Coyotes. He's got it good there and his kid is in the organization now too

That's what I mean. He was Mr. Red Wing, but then became GM of the Lightning, before eventually leaving for Detroit again. It was weird at the time to picture him with any other organization, but it still happened. It would be weird to see Doan with anyone other than the Coyotes, but I guess if Yzerman could do it, any could.

My vote is still Conroy. My only reservation there is if I remember correctly he was very instrumental in the GG hiring. Didn't he take him hiking up a mountain and decided he was the guy for the job? I can't remember if that went down before or after he was hired.

From what I recall, Doan and Iggy are pretty good friends. Conroy GM, Iggy coach and Doan somewhere in the org seems pretty good to me.

In fact, he tried briefly to argue his NMC prevented him from leaving Phoenix if the team got sold.
