We're not talking about multi-team tiebreakers where it's a bit more complicated. Two teams is about as easy as it gets. The fact you could beat a team twice, but that team maybe racked up some 7-0 wins over the relegation teams and that keeps them ahead, is idiocy. Imagine this match today was the last game of the season, and Spurs literally don't have to try and win, they can just park the bus and hope for a 1-0 loss. That's somehow better?

I don't really have an issue with goal differential being the tie breaker. Probably more a "it's always been this way" thing, but I also feel it makes more sense to use something that reflects the whole season, not just the head-to-head games. That makes more sense in a CL/EL group with only 6 games, but over a full season? I don't mind the status quo.
so that's it for Southampton. Too bad really, I liked them ... hope they can come back up quickly.

Does it reflect the whole season better? Take Liverpool right now, they have a +25 goal difference, but that is based almost entirely off of three games (9-0 vs Bournemouth, 7-0 vs United, 6-1 vs. Leeds). That's not exactly a "whole season" as to why their GD is where it is at. If you want tiebreakers to be based off whole season performance you can probably conjure up some complicated formula involving quality of wins, away/home wins, non-penalty goals, xG etc... and it might be fairer, or it might not.
When it comes to tiebreakers I guess I just like simplicity, and H2H is as simple as it gets.

Southampton will be back eventually, they have good infrastructure and a solid youth system. I don't think they have the support or population base for a prolonged period in the top half of the EPL table but they'll be competitive for the championship title regularly. Some teams like Blackpool, Bournemouth, etc have such thin infrastructure/support and you can see that they could end up being a league one team in the long run if or when they go down but Southampton will be there fencing with those other yo-yo clubs like Watford, Birmingham, Cardiff, Sheffield etc on OK footing.
It is a bit shocking that Forest and Bournemouth outperformed them but I thought that they got nervous during a bad patch and bailed on Hasenhuttl too soon, he was perfect for their team and set up and would have stuck with them in the Champ.

I see your logic for sure and I wouldn't hate head to head as a tie break either, it could work, but I think the whole premise in the EPL is not to rely on playoffs or recency to determine who gets crowned/is considered the best in a calendar year over every game and so I do like GD too as a measure of season long performance without being too complex.
I think even if one team crushes a bottom feeding team 9-0 at home, both teams get that same fixture so for me it does reflect total performance over every minute of the 9-10 months.

Every tiebreaker has its flaws, short of having them play in a one-off as the tiebreaker. Which given how money driven sports leagues are is surprising it hasn't gotten to that point. But we've also never really had it be a decider for an actual trophy. Even when Man City won in 11-12 on GD, they also beat United H2H twice. Now had that played out where Man City won on GD, but lost both games to United, I imagine the rule would have been changed because of the outcry of how unfair it would have been to United. Maybe one day we'll get to that scenario, and I fully expect it to result in a change.

Watching the Championship playoff and I really wish they had kept Sunderland til I die going. That was such a great show, and it would be awesome to see these past couple years in that series.

At their home opener next season they need to trot out Russel Crowe to just yell "Are You Not Entertained??"

yup. It's probably flown under the radar a bit because everybody's fawning over Haaland, but 27 for that Spurs team (which has scored 65 in total) is super impressive. Sure, Haaland has 36 now, but it's a free-flowing attacking team which might get to a 100 goals in total.

Crazy to me that City are gonna let Gundogan walk, he might be their most clutch player.

16. Nottingham - 36 games, -31, 34 points
17. Everton - 36 games, -24, 32 points
--------------------
18. Leeds - 36 games, -25, 31 points
19. Leicester - 35 games, -15, 30 points
NOTTINGHAM: Arsenal (H), Crystal Palace (A)
EVERTON: Wolverhampton (A), Bournemouth (H)
LEEDS: West Ham (A), Tottenham (H)
LEICESTER: Liverpool (H), Newcastle (A), West Ham (H)
will be interesting. Leicester has to pull off a shocker against Liverpool or Newcastle, or they're done. Think Everton might pull through based on their programme. Everton/Leeds the only one where GD might have an impact.

evem crazier to me that he's willing to leave them for Barcelona. Why players still trip over themselves to join this mess of a club, I will never understand.

I imagine it's the whole getting to live on the Mediterranean thing. Although the strangest part to me is that they all are willing to take wage cuts to do it. Nice weather is awesome and all, but money is still money.
