Center ice depth would be
Nylander
Kadri
Dube
Maybe with the right wingers Ruzicka can be that third line center but I think that he will get traded this summer.

Could you afford to pay Nylander, though? I bet his next contract will at least 9.5 to 10M per year.

He's a complementary guy. If you pay him you better make sure you have linemates that can move the puck in the transition game. I don't think he's a good mix for the Flames who aren't exactly the quickest team in the league.

Agreeing with Lanny that the Flames need to be competitive for the next 4 years to build themselves into a favourable rebuilding situation.
Duhatschek has an article today in the Athletic speculating if the Devils can retain Meier.
If Meier was willing to do a 5-6 year deal in the $9-10M range and the Devils dont want so sign him for that long would a trade with the Flames make sense?
Devils would get Mangiapane in return who makes $5.8M.
That leaves an additional $3-4M that the Flames would need to clear in order to add Meier. Most likely that would mean trading Coleman.
Is removing Mangiapane and Coleman for Meier a good direction for the team?
Assuming that the Devils would take Mangiapane in a trade if they are just going to walk away from Meier.

Not sure Mier moves the needle in terms of high end skill and speed, which is what this team truly lacks. He didn’t perform well in NJ, could definitely see them trying to move him but I Wouldn’t want to pay him 9.5

Meier comfortably settles the Flames in at the 16th overall draft pick for the next 5 years

I remember the 2008 draft where the Flames moved Tanguay for a 1st and 2nd and then traded a 1st and 2nd to get Cammalleri and a 2nd.
I wonder if the Flames consider moves like this to remake their top 6?

A writer on the Flames Nation website proposed selling high on Toffoli and making up for it by buying low on Garland.
The scenario would be to trade Toffoli for picks, then obtain Garland for the low price of nothing. The reasoning here is that Vancouver is already over the cap going into next season and it is rumoured that they are looking for someone to take Garland's contract.
Forget for a minute that if Vancouver was going to trade Garland for nothing, I think there would be other teams interested and they would probably want to avoid helping a division rival. There is also the rationale that Garland played lot with lower level line mates and didn't get a tonne of PP time. If you put him in Toffoli's role, he could put up a lot more points. I actually don't disagree with that. I think the writer under values Toffoli though. I think he could net better than a 2nd and 3rd rounder.

This is the highest value you’ll get for Toffoli, he’s easily worth a late first / 2 2nds

You can’t trade Tofolli if you are trying to be competitive next season. We can’t afford a replacement of him with the lack of cap space we have on his sweetheart contract

I think Coronato is a adequate replacement and I also don't think Toffoli repeats the season he had.
I like him but it's a business and we need to do what's best for the Flames.

Tyler Toffoli to Detroit for their 18th pick?
Turn around and trade that pick for Alex Debrincat.

Coronato has played one NHL game, he is not adequately replacing Tyler Toffoli.

Garland played with lower level line mates because he killed play by spinning in the corner a whole bunch before eventually turning the puck over when playing with higher level line mates. He's also the second coming of Rene Bourque when it comes to dumb shots at dumb times that lead to scoring chances the other way. The former could just be a fit issue (wants to control the puck which isn't his job when playing with Miller or Pettersson) the latter is a problem that plagued him with the Coyotes as well.

I doubt Yzerman is that short sighted honestly unless at the trade deadline.

5Hopefully we have the new GM in place early next week, give the new guy enough runway to get things situated heading into the draft. Then hopefully we will hear his (or her) idea for the team moving forward

I would be shocked if we got a 1st in this year's draft for Toffoli. Yes, he had a career year, yes he's on a good contract, but he's aging and a so-so skater.

Yup, only way I see a first is if he’s still playing as well as last season at the trade deadline
