I doubt that Maloney would put those words in his mouth if that wasn't the discussion they had.
The PR look is in the eye of the beholder. I don't see it as negative at all.

Maloney speculated about Treliving's possible future in the press conference. He did not say it's what Treliving told him.

Honestly? Sutter is the only piece I really havent decided on.
He coached this season like a man who wanted to get fired.

I think the problem was the circumstances in bringing Sutter in. Flames were a desperate bunch willing to throw millions at him to get him to step in and fix their mess yet again.
No wonder he felt like he was above the GM's roster transactions.
Still, pretty unwise of him to not work in tandem with the guy that accumulated that pool of talent over the last 8 years. Sutter forgot how to play nicely with others in his time away from the game. And again, the Flames pleading for his guiding hand probably inflated his ego even more.
Hiring Sutter was the right move in 2021. Things changed drastically with the team last summer though and they needed someone that could build rapport with the new players and acclimatize them without butting heads not a month in like he did.
The disrespect of the young players in a lot of ways was also disrespectful to Brad. I don't blame him for leaving.
Too bad there wasn't effective communication within the organization to drive home the problem before he walked.
As Saravelli put it... ass backwards.
Here's hoping the Flames learn from this last calendar year, from Murray Edwards down.
It's been a brutal time to be a supporter of this team. I couldn't imagine being a season ticket holder right now.

He certainly coached this season like he was hell bent on at least one person being fired whether it was himself, the GM or both.

Treliving must have given them an explanation. I doubt he just said he was leaving without any kind of statement. I also doubt that Maloney would just state something so specific, like that he didn't expect him to take another job immediately, if it wasn't what they were led to believe. Or maybe he does just make stuff up and says the first thing that comes to mind when asked questions he doesn't know the answer to. I don't really want to believe that though.

There's no doubt it would be an advantage for the Penguins in that scenario as Brad would know exactly who the Flames would be zeroing in on. But I'm sure the Penguins have their own list and since they pick ahead of the Flames it would not really matter that much what the Flames have planned unless the Flames attempted to trade up or Penguins trade down.

Could be somewhere in between too. And like people can change their minds too. I don't think Tre or Don were being malicious in this case

Flames hired Treliving while he was under contract to the Coyotes and would have been working on their draft and privy to the information.
Generally in a situation like this they provide the person with permission to talk to a team - because it's the honorable thing to do. Every team in the league knows that they want to bring the GM in prior to the draft and July 1st. Hell the Flames are probably doing it right now if they are interviewing any assistant GMs for their open role.
If they are concerned about the draft, in the past they have just said "you're not allowed to be part of the draft process" (think that was partially the case in Treliving's first year here).
Edwards is doing this is pure just out of spite to Treliving, has nothing to do with protecting some special draft strategy.

I think Maloney knew exactly why Treliving didn't want to return (terrible ownership) but would not say something negative about his team at a press conference.

Also trade implications this draft. Flames could be team looking to really make some moves.

Knowing how Edwards can be I would not be surprised if this was being done out of spite but he is the owner and it's within his power to do this for a variety of reasons. Some sound and some petty. We have seen teams block assistants from interviews in the past so this kind of stuff happens.

Then why did Maloney stay on? The terrible ownership group must've not got to him yet!

He wouldn't show up to the draft but it doesn't mean he wouldn't be part of their draft meetings. Who would let that leak out if he was?

One solution could be to make the compensation for signing Treliving before the draft, swapping of 1st round picks.
