I'm not going to speculate but it's obviously something serious and As someone who has endured and recovered from multiple life altering medical downfalls, I totally would understand Oliver wouldn't want to keep it private if it's something life changing.

He would hear about it daily and when you're recovering from something life altering in a bad way, you try to not think about it and focus on being positive and putting it behind you and healing physically and emotionally. Hearing about it daily and every single interview they are asking you about it, it would be like ripping off the band aide over and over.

Whatever it is , only he knows when he will be ready to resume his career, he can take as much time as he likes and the Flames giving him that time, shows that they are a classy organization.

Branstrom - Weegar
Zadorov - Stecher

I think that would be an outstandingly balanced top six.
You did go full armchair GM, and not a particularly good one.

As much of that Oiler playoff series we all want to forget, who could ever forget Kylington's reaction to Tkachuk trash talking Kane in the penalty box. That was amazing.

Why do fans want to trade away ever player for magic beans?
The Flames wouldn't be trying to grow another "him", they would be trying to grow an equivalent that was exactly not "him". The AAV of the contract is irrelevant; the player didn't play.

If that is "magic beans", so be it.

Maybe those magic beans would be enough to make the playoffs. Or at least a beanstalk.

not really, unless we want to believe that a player signed a new 2 year deal despite hating the coach, then didn't report to the team for a year because of said coach and the team seemingly being okay with that. No chance of that happening. Nothing suspicious about the timing either ... there were videos of Oliver working out on social media and therefore chatter of him returning days before Sutter was fired.

Players don’t usually discount despite fan hope. But if any player feels like the team did him a solid, it should be Oliver.

I've always wondered what he would be like as a forward.

It's too late now to learn a new position, but it is surprising his junior coaches didn't try to convert him. He would be an amazing winger with those wheels.

I don't necessarily agree. There is a different type of skating and stickhandling as a defenseman as opposed to as a forward. Defense is more of a smooth glide, with bursts as needed, while forwards are more consistent hard and fast, with less gliding. (Gliding not to be confused with coasting.)

Yes, there are exceptions, but this is my opinion, and why he really is a d-man to me.

Tell that to Brent Burns or Big Buff.

Kylington is a good defenseman. He’s not Erik Gustafsson.

If there was ever an explosive skater on the Flames, it's Kylly.

Alas, it is moot. He's definitely a d-man now and will remain one for his pro career.

Yeah, watch Zadorov - he's a good skater up ice. Into the O-zone and he's a little lost with edgework. Hanifin is better but still, more of a D skater.

That said, is he a worse candidate than Mark Pysyk, the most recent example I can think of?

But nobody is giving up anything of value for him unless they are 100% sure he'll play. And I'm not sure how they would get to that level of confidence. He's worth more to us than anybody else until he's back performing on the ice

Guys like Burns, Bufuglien, and at one point Scott Niedermayer were all used at forward and all of them eventually went back to playing defence. Is Colorado thinking they should move Makar to forward? Don't do it...having a guy who can skate the puck up the ice from the backend is a nice asset to have.

Sometimes it's just mental and how the player sees the game. I remember Phil Housley talking about why someone with his skill set preferred defense over playing forward, and he said it was all about perspective and being able to see everything going on in front of you, or something to that effect. I suppose that could be a product of learning the game on the back end however. The Flames tried him a few games as a center, but he apparently hated it.

Which is perfect to drive play from the back end.

I like a fast stick handling play maker on the back end.

It is a hole in the Flames game.

In reality he could turn into a rover type D-man ie: Niedermayer, Makar, Coffee

I’d settle for Brodie with a better shot, though it does occur to me Brodie with a better shot is probably a Norris contender.

Of course he is going to play this year, he needs a contract for the following season.
