I think that is relevant, because at that time no one had any idea that Sutter would be let go.

But would it be wise to sign Lindholm to an 8 years deal at, say, $8.5MM? Or cash in on your best trade chip?

Should Calgary run back the same team, minus a few core players, due to cap constraints, and hope that Sutter leaving makes all the difference ?

That's quite the gamble with so many pending UFA's.

Lindy would be crazy to resign after that season. This is his lowest value. Unless the Flames are willing to offer him an 8 year deal off of his 21/22 numbers, it's in his best interest to play out this season and increase his value for when he hits UFA. That's why he's not answering, you can see he's been told not to.

I'm not so sure.

Season 1: .96 PPG
Season 2: .77 PPG
Season 3: .84 PPG
Season 4: 1.0 PPG
Season 5: 0.8 PPG

Career as Flame: 0.88 PPG

Lindholm wasn't far off his Flames career average.

I think the mistake would be the Flames signing him an extension based on his two best seasons, but that's likely what they'd have to do to retain his rights (if not a premium on-top of that). To your point though - without that premium attached, why would Lindholm sign THIS summer. That's the decision point for me. Flames have two options in my eyes:

Option 1: Pay a premium to extend Elias Lindholm this Summer.
Option 2: Trade him

I don't think there's another option on the table that's a smart move, and I think Option 2 is smarter than Option 1.

I've had the same thought.. I'm sure Murray and his underlings would love to shove that in our faces if the Panthers were to go on to win the Cup this year. "See! Get in and anything can happen.. lets run it back again. That could be us next season."

There were a few tweets saying that there was friction between players too. Sorry can’t point to the exact quotes but I do recall seeing them.
You also gotta think with our cap the way it is, Lindholm might be wondering where the money would come from and if he could make significantly more elsewhere.

Or maybe he’d see it as how to not handle star (or potential star in Bennett’s case) players? Don’t bridge a guy who you want for a future captain. And don’t let a coach like Glue Gun ruin your highest pick in franchise history. Both of those guys could and should still be wearing the flaming c.

The fit isn't right. The only thing the Flames have to offer is an overpayment. Handing out another massive contract for a player soon to be 30 is just handcuffing them even further. Huberdeau, Kadri, Weegar, Markstrom, Coleman, already have that covered. 35 million in cap space for another 4-5 years minimum just on those 5. That's ugly. Add Lindholm and we have half the cap space spent on 6 guys who are all likely past their prime or soon to be.

That would take quite a bit of "intellectual honesty" on his part, so probably not. But hey I hope you're right and he learns from all of this org's mistakes. Watching Bennett and Tkachuk lift the cup in Florida would be tough to watch that's for sure.

Hanifin for Nylander continues to make sense imo

Won’t be hard for me, I still like both the players and hope they do well. Besides if they win the cup it means Edmonton didn’t which is all that matters this year.

Hanifin is worth far more than Nylander.

If you want to keep him you offer lindy a fair contract, somewhere in the neighbour of 8.5x8, and set a deadline for sometime before the season starts. Ideally it would be before the draft but that seems too close. If he doesn't sign you have to move him.

If lindy goes I think you need to start a retool by trading most of the 2024 UFAs for young players/prospect/picks.

If he stays I think you move hanifin for a guy like nylander or reinheart.

Vladar feels like he's going to be out either way.

The Flames are turning into the San Jose Sharks just with worse contracts.

I suspect that Colorado will be busy on the phones.

Compared to their cup winning roster, their current roster looks much weaker especially with Landeskog out for next season.

I wouldn't be surprised if they make a major free agent signing or significant trade to complete again in the West.

Is he really? or are you projecting what his father was like on to his son?
I ask because I don't think he's soft at all. He's a skilled player but he will go to tough areas and battle hard.
Would love to see him here.

On the Lindholm front and whether you re-sign him. You do not sign a player based on what he has done, you sign a player based on what he is going to do and if he brings value to the organization. Lindholm is a quantity the Flames are sorely lacking. There is nothing in the system with potential to replace him. He's a highly skilled two way center that can play up and down the line up in any role you give him, but most importantly, he can play on the top line. He still has a good six to eight years of quality play in him which would buy the team time to find another center to become the heir apparent. Until they find that guy, they need Lindholm more than probably any other player in the organization. Letting him walk for nothing would be a massive mistake. Trading him without first trying to get an extension done is also a massive mistake. The Flames need this guy and will have to pay him or they are going to suffer.

Center depth in the organization is kind of really poor. You have Lindholm, Kadri, Backlund as your top three and then a bunch of meh. Zary has potential to be a solid Backlund replacement, which makes Backlund expendable. Schwindt and Jones have potential to be a solid #4 center, given a chance. After that, the pickings are non-existent. So it's a matter of we NEED to retain Lindholm just to remain competitive and until we can get some centers with offensive potential in the system.

I think the Sabres could be an interesting landing spot for Lindholm, have a ton of cap space and could serve as a 2nd line C/winger. A great 200 ft game would serve well for all the Sabres firepower.

Lindholm signed for Jack Quinn?
