I fully believe he took a big discount with the Oilers because he was getting settlement money from San Jose. The settlement was literally the difference between the two contract amounts. So he's collecting the equivalent of $7 million per year, which allowed him to sign the big discount in Edmonton and save the cap space. I'm actually shocked the league let it play out as they did.

But that still isn't as ridiculous as Duncan Keith.

Duncan Keith requests a trade to be closer to, and spend more time with, family, specifically mentioning his son that lives in Penticton. Of course it makes sense for him to retire with 1 year left to go and be with his family. If that's what he did. Instead he takes a supposed front-office job in Edmonton with a team he has a tenured 80-game history with, which should give him less time to spend with his family. And its been confirmed hes moved to Penticton, thanks to an interview in the Penticton Herald that basically confirms the front office job is a facade.

https://www.pentictonherald.ca/spare...60a58f175.html

It should be clear to anyone that he was given a fake role that allowed him to "retire" but still collect his money, move to be with his family, and allow the Oilers to rid themselves of his cap and pay him the money in a different way.
Great post, and that doesn’t even cover the Mike Smith LTIR. You discuss the Kane issue well, there was never ever any destination for Kane but Edmonton, it was a complete fix. If another team would have tried to sign him the league would have suspended him indefinitely.

The league is so afraid of McDavid demanding a trade or walking at free agency (Draisaitl as well) and this team heading into another 20+ yrs of darkness. The NHL will do anything to get them a Cup to try to head off that possibility, or at least leave Edmonton with the Championship as compensation, when those two leave.

I have stated many times, the goal of the league has changed. It is all about marketing and money, the quality and actual integrity of the game are far down the list of priorities. It’s a poor product and disgusting.

I’m a hockey fan caught in this poor evolution of the game continuing to hope it changes back to the better.

I watch less, care less, and am much less invested. The anointing of heroes, the game management, the ads on the boards....all marketing and worse content.

The Devils beat the Rangerse because of their speed. Yet Carolina, a slower team, with 3 of its best forwards out, is completely smothering the Devils.

The Hurricanes are using stretch passes to bypass the Devils in the neutral zone. They avoid the neutral zone entirely. The Devils rely on neutral zone turnovers and then score off the rush. Carolina makes no such turnovers. Carolina also uses all of their players on the forecheck, so the opposing party has no cohesion. This also forces more turnovers by the Devils.

I think Carolina would be the hardest counter for the Oilers out of every team in the NHL.
Everything the Oilers excel at, Carolina is basically designed to counter. This is despite the general lack of speed. By the way, Carolina has the 2nd best PK% and has been top 3 every year for the past 3 years. They also took the fewest penalties out of all the playoff teams.

I agree, Carolina executes very well to make them successful. Clearly the amount of penalties during the regular season doesn’t translate in the playoffs when you are playing the Oilers. I still worry that the poor officiating would give enough PP opportunities to Edmonton to help get them past.

But purely 5v5 and if the penalties are kept in check, Carolina would sweep Edmonton with relative ease.

I agree with almost everything you wrote, the bold part though is irrelevant because the refs will call penalty on Oilers' opponent no matter what. And they'll buy any and every dive Oilers took.

I genuinely think Eichel is winning the McDavid vs. Eichel head to head battle, and handily. And he hasn't even been that good.

McDufus has been a complete non-factor aside from flopping for a couple calls. Leon has done all the footwork for the team in terms of star power.

During the same timeline that professional wrestling “comes clean” and openly admits that it is “sports entertainment”, a somewhat legitimate argument materializes that there’s a certain amount of “scripting” involved with the NHL.

All the fans who are "guaranteeing" an Oilers cup are pathetic.

Edmonton is no good.

No “guarantees” in this business, of course, but I am predicting the spectacular repeat of an Edmonton-Carolina final with the similar sweet outcome.

Every time the No Goods start strutting about with puffed chests they end up stepping on a rake.

Happens every time.
