Why is it that as soon as a coach gets fired, he is added to the list of possible coaches here?

They got fired for a reason, normally because the team didn't do well, so why are tbey suddenly going to make us better.

That is that pseudo optimism everyone starts with for coaches. Sutter wins coach of the year and then he is fired because he cant "manage" players emotions. Optimism is now whoever we get will be brilliant and make the team get 120 points next year.

At the start of last season the Flames were projected to be a cup contender.

That didn't materialize. Coaching was likely a big factor, and explains Sutter's departure.

What I mean by that is, with the right coach it's possible for the team to rebound and compete next year, not only game in game out putting up a competitive season and a playoff appearance, but with the team they have on paper they should be able to challenge for the cup of Lord Stanley.

Could Gallant be the guy to put them over the top?

He's very successful, heck to Vegas to the finals in their expansion year. His firing there seemed... odd.

Is he hard on players? That I don't know. Possibly.

Does that mean that he'd cause Huberdeau to have the same season next year as he has this year?

In theory... yes.

Except, Huberdeau cut his teeth in the NHL under Gallant. Huberdeau won the Memorical Cup with Saint John under Gallant. They have a relationship, and that likely would go to him rebounding next year rather than having a repeat of this year's poor perforamance.

Am I saying Gallant is the right coach to go after? No. But, that's because I really don't know the right coach to go after, I don't know if promoting from within is the right path. Me saying I don't know, means, just that, I have no idea.

Ultimately, I want a coach that will lead us to the Cup. Don't care if it's Gallant, Sutter, Love or Gordon Bombay.

All that to say I wouldn't dismiss Gallant out of hand.

If the Flames want to keep Lindholm, Backlund, Toffoli, Zadorov, etc, then hiring Gallant might not be the best idea.

It does seem like Gallant's style of more suitable for the modern NHL than is Darryl Sutter's. He's an effective coach.
I just don't think the Flames can afford to have back-to-back abrasive coaches.

If the Flames win a cup, it will be with Wolf in net, not Markstrom. I hope that whoever the Flames hire, it's someone who is openminded enough to make obvious personnel decisions. If younger players excel, then they should succeed based on merit.

Seems like he's had run-ins with management on every team that he's coached.

Stay far away

I think the Rangers hire Q, assuming he gets permission from Bettman to return

As the Rangers and president/general manager Chris Drury embark on a search for a successor to head coach Gerard Gallant, who parted ways with the organization in what has been framed as a mutual decision, The Post has learned that Joel Quenneville will not be among the candidates.

We were told late Friday by an NHL official that Quenneville, who has been out of the league since he was permitted to resign as Florida coach in late October 2021, has not been cleared for a return. Saturday we were told that the Rangers will not pursue the matter with commissioner Gary Bettman, who is the sole arbiter in this matter.

I feel like if Huberdeau is your factor when deciding who to be the head coach, I'd put Quenneville and Brunette ahead of Gallant. He played well for Gallant but took his game to the next level with the other coaches. I'd obviously lean Brunette for non-hockey reasons.

I think he would be 3.0, no? Greg Gilbert, Glen Gulutzan?

The guy never said anything remotely close to this. Nor did he act in that manner. He came here with a great attitude, and he did EVERYTHING Sutter asked him to do. Without complaining.

I get that it was a frustrating year, but why fabricate complete garbage like this? If you were here all year (and no doubt you were), you know this is not at all what happened.

Why outright insult a player, when it is not remotely true? Seriously, why do that? I would never play in Canada, with #### like this constantly happening.

This is literally the opposite of what Huberdeau did in Calgary last season. He played exactly how Sutter wanted him to which led to a dramatic drop in points because he didn't come in with the attitude of "I scored 115 points once and I know best". What season were you watching?

Gallant may have a short shelf life, but he's no Gulutzan or Gilbert.

The guy actually piles up the wins and has been to the Conference Finals and Cup Finals in the last 5 or 6 seasons.

Still no though.

Interview Love first and see if he’s the right guy. If not, I want us to at least interview GG. The better GG.
There are two GG's????!?!

Well for better or worse Huberdeau does not seem to be shy with his opinions so perhaps he would say something to Maloney one way or another.

It kind of amazes me, I know 2 people who know Gallant personally and they both say he's one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet, he must turn into an evil pumpkin behind the bench

In fairness, I do know a number of people who are super nice, sweet, laid back, funny, relaxed, geniunely awesome people, but as soon as they flip the switch to "professional setting" they are c**** and a*******. So it is possible.

I have read similar things about Sutter. I don't think you can look at how they act as a coach and think that it extends to life outside of the rink. Just like some players are down right mean to play against, are really nice people off the ice.

I think these "tough" coaches who get rewards but have short shelf lives have me thinking more about the "today's" player. Are there just not enough guys who want to win? Are they all looking for a participation award and collect paycheques?
