Oh, it was most certainly shade at Bennett. In 2019 when he had 5 pts in 5 games there was no shortage of people claiming that "Sam Bennett cannot be your best player in the playoffs"
Instead of questioning why he only got 13:14 of average icetime, the narrative was that he's still a scrub and his production was insufficient for a top producer
The same year ROR had 23 pts in 26 games to win the Conn Smythe
Not once did the fanbase or organization lean into what Bennett was doing, they leaned away

In fairness (as someone who's been to journalism school) the industry standard for most news article writing is 1–3 sentences to a paragraph. Any longer and it starts to look more like an essay. Brevity is key when writing to a wide audience.
But Bell takes that to the absolute extreme. Comes across like he's trying to beat you over the head with every single line.

If the guys complaining were just the kids saying "not enough ice time" or the newbies, then you'd wonder. But when it's Backlund, that says a lot.

Yeah that is a bit of the kicker...
Frolik-Backlund-Tkachuk was better than Bennett-Backlund-Tkachuk during that 2017-2020 time frame.
And the 3rd line was a lot more effective with Bennett on it, than when he was bumped up to the top 6 with Backlund and Tkachuk. So that didn't help Bennett either.
Still think there could have been more tried to unlock Bennett in Calgary...but once again with the team always in win-now mode they didn't really experiment much. Always went with what gave them the best change to win that night, instead of potentially long term.

Monahan-Gaudreau-Ferland was also better than Guadreau-Monahan-Backlund over the same period
All that really speaks to, is that if you're just cycling a guy as the third wheel on a fixed line, and then complaining when they don't work out, you're not really giving them an actual opportunity.

Current AGM Craig Conroy is the hometown favourite to replace Treliving, now more than 12 years into his front office career with the Flames. Fellow assistant Brad Pascall is also a candidate after running the team’s AHL affiliate the past nine seasons. Calgary’s top feeder was the AHL’s number one team this season, which followed up a trip to the league’s final four the year prior. Detroit’s Shawn Horcoff, Dallas’s Rich Peverley, and Carolina’s Eric Tulsky are among the external names we’ve heard right from the get-go. More recently, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman added London Knights general manager Mark Hunter to the fray and told Flames Talk earlier this week he’s a “potentially serious contender”.

Was Backlund complaining about Sutter? I thought he said he wanted a chance to win because he's getting on in his career. Don't see how removing Sutter necessarily resolves that.

Weegar or Huberdeau for captain. Can't have a guy with questionable contract status be your guy.

I think it was just hard to get Bennett into the top 6 as a center because he had to beat out Monahan or Backlund, and then later Lindholm at the time. I don't think he was ready to be a top 2 center at the time and he never showed that he was better than any of those guys. They tried to get him into the top 6 as a winger, but he didn't seem to adjust to that well.
In hind sight, do you trade Monahan or Backlund to accommodate Bennett, who at the time was a downgrade? Maybe not acquire Lindholm, or keep Lindholm on the wing where he wasn't as productive?
I guess knowing what we know now about Monahan, trading him for some serious loot back then and keeping Bennett would have been great, but Monahan's decline due to injuries wasn't predictable.

GullFoss - we can blame Huberdeau and Kadri all we want, but its also putting your head in the sand about the fact that our two best forwards wanted out of the team last summer as well. Even if the results were good in the regular season - you still have your two most important players wanting out.

If the Flames are waiting to interview Tulsky, they might be waiting a while. I suspect that he will also get a call from the Pens, so waiting around for him might not be the most wise thing to do unless they think they can offer him a better deal than Pittsburgh. Just speculating of course, maybe the Pens have no interest in him.

Not saying Mark Hunter wouldn't be a good hire, but he really doesn't put the young in young and progressive that Maloney had mentioned wanting.

Yeah, that's Bell's shtick. His columns always read like he is writing for a 3rd grade reading level. Which, considering the source, he might be!

Are we sure it was "interview [Mark] Brunette" or was it "interview a brunette?"
