I kinda wish Johnny had signed with the Devils instead of Columbus.
So does he.

So players need to hip check now to make checks like that? Even that may be illegal these days apparently.
I think lack of player responsibility for their own safety is out the window if that's gonna be an illegal hit nowadays. For concussion reasons, I get it, but open ice checking is going the way of the dodo since as a player you can't risk hitting a player that puts themselves in a vulnerable position by their own doing.
Trouba had him lined up for a long time. He targeted the head, he hit the head, he KO'd the player. It would be different if it was a split second play and the head wasn't targeted. The hit tonight was an obvious head shot, on purpose. He saw a vulnerable player with his head down. He wasn't trying to hit the chest or shoulder or anything else. Head was down, he targeted the head.
If Trouba can't make the hit without hitting the head first (especially with all the time he took to line him up) then don't make the hit. Easy peasy.

Think it's more that you underrated the Devils who are also a good team.
I guess we'll see against Carolina how they do, although they're wounded quite badly right now. But at least they are much more cohesive bunch and can skate with anyone.
The Rangers had something dysfunctional however, after the deadline and all the way into the playoffs. Sure, the PP was dynamic but other than that it seems they couldn't find another gear at all like you would think after adding Kane and Tarasenko. And defensively just a mess.
What a great find Schmid was for the Devils, 5th rounder in 2018 and looks like a superstar on the rise. Props to Lindy Ruff for having the guts to put the young goalie in net with the season on the line too.
Just caught that Trouba hit. Any chance of supplementary discipline on that? It looked like the head was the point of contact from the angle they showed, but they didn't make much of a big deal about it.
