According to the media, everyone you talk to from equipment managers to players complained about a dark cloud over the Saddledome. Strategies and objectives in spite of creating a "winning culture". Culture eats strategy for breakfast, right?
1. Culture is created by the behaviors you tolerate. If you will tolerate bad behavior, people will learn they can get away with it. That doesn’t mean you have to be mean about it, but create a culture of "open and honest" feedback, and make sure it goes both ways.
2. Change starts at the top. Often, the leader will not be open to change, and it can be in their body language or becoming defensive when someone disagrees with them, etc. You can’t expect your people to change if you’re not willing to change first.
3. The leader needs to recognizes that they are ‘a voice’ around the table, not ‘the voice.’ This is a huge challenge, as leaders often see themselves as the only person capable and authorized to make decisions. While it’s true that they need to make the decisions, they also need to listen honestly and without showing impatience for other people’s opinions. Some call it the obligation to dissent, but whatever you call it, make sure people feel validated for their opinions, and when you make a decision, take those opinions into account.

Would love to see Brunette behind the bench. Don't think the Flames will spend for a Quenneville.

Yup, let's make sure to remember that based on many reports, it wasn't only the players, but everyone in the Organization seemingly. I also hate how many coaches the Flames have gone through but at the same time, Sutter has always always always had a shelf life as a coach. His two cups bought him 1 more year than he probably should have go in L.A .
It's kind of remarkable that the ending of two tenures for Daryl as Coach , ended the same way, player led revolt

Secondly, I think many people don't know how much Barkov played a role in taking the heat off Huberdeau. The second he was dealt here he was destined to be a 80 point player based on team style and not having the calibre of linemate. I didn't see him as a superstar, but a definite star who would produce at a lower clip. With Sutter gone, I could see him building confidence to hit 75 points this year with the right approach, but we'll see.

Huberdeau barely played with Barkov at all in his last 2 seasons in Florida. When they tried him with Barkov, it never really worked out.

Everyone saying that the game has passed Darryl by...comon. What was last year? He was soured by a primmadona UFA and a guy who looked like he quit after game 5 when the lines got changed. The sub 900 goal tending all year didn't help. I think its gonna be a couple hard years for us.
|
What about last year? Darryl managed to get the same amount of wins out of that core as group as Bill Peters did, and nobody lost sleep over his departure. Darryl was also thoroughly embarrassed by our provincial rivals and out coached by a rookie in round 2. It was and continues to be an extremely talented roster despite what Darryl has led some of you to believe. Let’s not pretend that he came in here and turned an annual bottom feeder into a cup champion.
The issue however extends beyond purely his win/loss record. This coach created an environment in which the vast majority of players didn’t want to be apart of. Don’t kid yourself thinking that one or two players were the mains causes for this outcome.

Moreso from having shut down lines spend time on Barkov rather than him.

Tree had to go regardless of the Sutter outcome. I don't even know historically if any other GM came close to having 5 coaches in a ten year tenure. Granted circumstances around Peter's notwithstanding but yeah, Tree wasn't going to get a 6th coach.

Steinberg said on The Eric Francis Show that he heard Mikael Backlund was in the 'Dome today for the press conference. Sounds like he REALLY hated Sutter.

I think the issue with the coaching carousel had more to do with Edwards imposing a budget on coaching than anything else. The wallet was opened for his old pal Sutter.

Last season, he played with Bennett and Duclair not Barkov, and had over 100 points season.

Ok, I see what you mean. I can buy that. Him being on the 2nd line away from Barkov would likely give him easier match-ups. I think playing with Bennet and Duclair was really beneficial for him as well because both of them play a style that took the focus off Huberdeau by crashing around and causing a ruckus. I think playing with Bennett was mutually beneficial for both players, but for Hubereau especially. The year before, he was with Wenneberg and Hornqvist mostly, which was similar.
The Flames need to try and recreate that somehow. I thought Kadri and Coleman or Dube might be able to do that, but it didn't work.

Barkov went from under rated to over rated
Guy played 67 games he wasn't the reason Huberdeau scored 115
Not to mention the other seasons over PPG for Huberdeau

Good luck Darryl. Thank you for your hard work and bringing the organization up to where they could get to in your special way that only you could.
I don't know if anyone remembers Johnny G talking about kicking trash cans and Sutter getting mad, it always stuck with me when that came up. This is purely speculative, I wonder if Kylington is getting ready to come back now that Sutter is gone.
Either way, his way worked but it isn't the modern way.
