I'll give Maloney this, he certainly seems in touch with the game & player of today. Very encouraging.

Maloney: Young players today expect to play in the NHL... and can play in the NHL.
Sounds like that was a big issue. Not giving enough ice to the young guys.

The base for next year (my guess)
Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Dube - Kadri - Coronato
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coleman
Pelletier - Ruzicka - Duehr
Phillips, Zary
Weegar - Andersson
Kylington - Tanev
Hanifin/Zadorov - Stetcher
Markstrom/Vladar
Wolf
Possible trade chips to change the forward group: One of Markstrom or Vladar, Lindholm (was on Seravalli's trade board - maybe that changes now), Hanifin
Love that Maloney is talking about youth

WTF? First it was Bruins getting ousted. Then the Avs. Now Sutter? Holy ####! Why didn't the Flames tank to try and get Bedard?

My general reaction is positive. I don't think all the blame sits with Sutter but he sure didn't seem to be helping things with some of his antics. The team had a negative cloud the entire year that he fed into.
Hopefully this is a start of a new beginning for this franchise.
Edit: Also relieved that he will not have influence over player personnel decisions going forward.
|
I'm also surprised. I figured he'd tell them "OK OK, I'll be better next year", they'd give him 20 games and then fire him if he didn't.
Onus is on the players now.

Boy.. Don's true feelings are pretty clearly shining through. The media is trying to get an expose quote from him, which he's not taking the bait on, but you can clearly tell what was going on.

My best summary:
- Maloney says he did thorough interviews with players, staff, agents and it's apparent a new voice is needed.
- Says Sutter is a good coach with a great hockey mind, but today's world requires a different approach. Says Sutter is demanding and firm.
- Focusing on finding a GM first, who will then hire a coach and coaching staff (wonder if more are let go).
- Doesn't believe that Treliving will be an option, going in a new direction and is excited.
- Not going to comment on what the players/staff said or what kind of environment it was at the rink.
- Treliving leaving and Sutter fired has nothing to do with one another. Two seperate situations.
- Players were very, very frustrated with the season. Thought they had a team to make the playoffs. Has to address upcoming UFAs.
- Spoke to Kylington and says that he is in a very good place and is ready to come back next season. Some changes needed, and young players need to get into the lineup and get a chance.
- Once they get a GM they will hire a coach, and that coach will determine what goes on with the rest of the coaching staff.
- Reiterates that players have a stronger voice these days, but don't want to have the "inmates running the asylum, so to speak".
- Sounds like they are going to continue persuing the window to win, not going to just be selling off assets.
- Important to have a long-term solution as coach, but that's not always the reality. Have to get a GM and coach that connect with "today's player".
- Young players are more prepared to play in the NHL immediately. Have a veteran team, but they need to have youth in the lineup and play meaningful minutes.
- Tkachuk and Gaudreau didn't leave because of Sutter/Treliving. Attitude around the rink had more to do with underachieving than any particular personality.
- Had a lot of conversations with Murray Edwards about moving this team forward.

Who knows, but typically the last thing you want to do in a fire sale is to say you're going to have a fire sale.

Two thoughts
Player control due to NMCs would diminish options and return
You are selling low on everything. Not great asset management
