The myth that Sutter held back young players is such crap. We don't have quality young players that should have been players. The players lack of talent is what held them back.
|
If Sutter isn't coaching we bring them back down rom the press box. Pelletier sat the end of the year (6 or 7 games?), Coronato never got a look until they were out, Wolf sat in the minors while both goalies fumbled their starts, all while Lucic left the lineup maybe twice, Nick Ritchie was given plenty of rope, Lewis was serviceable.

I'm not complaining about Huberdeau or Markstrom who had off years but can be expected to bounce back. I'm complaining about guys like Lucic and Ritchie. Players with no future here being leaned on more than should have been.

Pelletier played a lot and was not impressive at all still young so maybe that changes but hardly anything that changes our fortunes considering how much he played and how poorly he played.
Coronato, meh. But even if you think he is good any indication to think that he will not play under Sutter?
Wolf isn't helping us get faster and with Markstrom and Vladar it isn't likely that Sutter is the only coach that wouldn't have brought him up or that the management of the club disagreed with that decision.
So it doesn't really seem like a bunch of young fast players ready to come in if Sutter goes. And that really is the problem even if Sutter goes people aren't going to get the style, results or players they want because we just don't have the players to do that.

In the vast majority of games that Pelletier played, he was near the top of the team in terms of xGF%, CF%, whatever metric you want to look at. He is not and will never be a superstar, but he excelled in his role and if anything should have been given a longer leash up the lineup. I'm not sure what else fans or coaches could have expected.
Look at the Kraken two days ago, They dressed a rookie in his first ever NHL game for game 5 in the playoffs against the defending Cup champs. He rewards the team with a goal.
Does anybody ever see the Flames giving a 21 year old player like that an opportunity in a game of this magnitude?
Darryl iced a worse roster down the stretch when the team needed a spark the most. For me, that is when he sealed his fate.

I may get roasted for saying this, but Bill Peters got fired for less. It's so obvious that Sutter has made a completely toxic workplace and anyone responsible for letting it continue into next season is going to be just as culpable.
Do the right thing Flames (Edwards/Maloney).

Conroy is in Europe and he’ll be there for a while as he’s going to be the AGM of team USA at the worlds. It’s entirely conceivable that the Flames plan to, formally, name him GM when he is back and that could also coincide with a decision on Sutter shortly thereafter.
It wouldn’t be surprising if this is how it goes.

How many players have the Flames had that deserved that chance or had shown an reason to think that they could contribute?
Gaudreau, Monahan and Tkachuk played key roles at that age. Bennett played plenty of minutes when he was young. Kylington got 38 games but we weren't in the play-offs at the time so no chance to have that opportunity.

The Kraken were up against it due to injuries. I imagine if 3 forwards (4 if you count Hayden) were out of the lineup Sutter plays Pelletier.

Until 2 days ago who had heard of Tye Kartye? Undrafted out of the OHL, didn't hit a PPG there until his third season, he's in his rookie pro season, didn't average a PPG in the AHL, and he plays in the playoffs and scores.
Even his name sounds made up.

Right, thanks for that. I don't agree with Cali either, but I guess I still don't understand what "sounds pretty white" is supposed to mean in this context.
Peters being fired is "pretty white"? Sutter not being fired for being a crappy coach is "pretty white"? Is "pretty white" being used as a pejorative or compliment?

Sorry I read it as "when have the Flames ever given a player that chance" didn't realize it was only supposed to be under Sutter.
But the question would remain has there been players that should have got that chance and didn't? I can't think of any but certainly could have missed it.

In fact keeping him sounds like it might help us get rid of many of the players we need gone.

About the only explanation I can come up with after what we saw from him last season. How on earth can you not see Sutter as a huge problem? Explain.

By posting that they felt Sutter, who has no history of Racist abuse, was worse than Bill Peters someone perpetuated racist against at Black man, the comment implies that the opinion is completely ignoring both overt and systemic racism in the Peter case, and likely willfully so, therefore it is a safe assumption that the poster is white, or at the very least benefits historically the anti-Black racism cooked into society.
either you didn't know that, or you did and you're about to comment on 'reverse-racism'. Either way I'm curious how this turns out.

I think it is clear that the biggest problem is that the players are not good enough and someone in management or ownership refuses to admit this so continues to make poor decisions trying to get 8th place and 4 or 5 play-off games. I don't think Sutter was great last season and wouldn't be up in arms if he were fired, but a different coach doesn't get much different out of this group and many would get a lot less.
Changing the coach and leaving the same basic group of players and same push for 8th and pray approach fixes nothing with this team. We are not good enough to do anything, we are not a coach away from competing. The players and approach needs changing before the coach.
