Correct me if I'm wrong but the implication seems to be if we spend more than $1 on a new arena then every societal challenge will never be fixed.

Not arrogant in any way my friend. Just talking about the shared reality that we all experience.

You disagree, that's fine, but that does not make me arrogant. That's something you're perceiving in me that isn't there.

You are not wrong.

Now, tell me if you think I’m wrong about this:

If they held the exact same press conference tomorrow and announced they were spending all the arena money on homelessness, or the Green Line, or a train between Calgary and Edmonton, there would be 1000x more ####-flipping, because people don’t actually care about these sorts of issues unless they’re grandstanding over their opposition to arena projects.

I’ll hang up and listen to your answer.

Would not be against the City of Calgary building their own event centre, where they (we) get a cut of the sales of tickets, parking, concessions etc etc etc. When the city was (briefly) thinking about going ahead with their own building I was for it. They could go to CSEC and say hey, we have this hockey rink, we're not building another one, let's work something out.

It's saying something when guys don't have anything (even Cali Panthers) but emotional appeals about the team leaving and begging to look at the "big picture". Sorry some of you don't like criticisms of the deal. If you want a feel good only thread, go start that. Instead others will continue to think critically about the situation and not just ask Murray Edwards to go gentle.

Maybe not this year, maybe not next year (and it could be this year or next year, these things can be unpredictable) but it is a nearly 40 year old structure that was underwater up to the luxury suites. The one working freight elevator to the main concourse has a placard proudly certifying it passed inspection in 1983.

I suspect 20k people who don’t go to hockey games might enjoy it if Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande came to town.

To say nothing of the area surrounding the dome being decades overdue for redevelopment - they could have so much going on down there, instead it’s a wasteland.
There are literally nets on the ceiling to catch falling pieces of concrete. It's not inconceivable that something happens one day that injures someone.

People can take it or leave it, but you're never getting a better opportunity to build something if this falls through. The deals keep getting worse and worse for the city every time one falls through because they have no leverage. The idea that some generous white knight billionaire will come in and build an arena using mostly their own money is a pipe dream. The city will eventually just have to condemn the Saddledome and not have anything, because without an anchor big league tenant paying rent for 35 years, the city won't be building anything.

Think about the big picture, i will be able to take a leak without parking halfway through an open stall door and having the entire bathroom watching . I'm kind of a fan of privacy.

It's also nice to go to a 3hr event and have the option to do a number 2 after a flam'n hotdog!

Jokes aside, i can't wait to see a game in a brand new building, once we see our our first game after years at the dome, it's going to be worth it.

There has been almost no political will to get this arena deal done WITH a major anchor tenant.

Why would that change if the Flames left? The argument would become “we don’t even have a hockey team, we can go to Edmonton or Vancouver for the weekend if we really want to see a show.”

The example you’re hoping to follow is the one where we lose the team for sixteen years, build a new arena that’s too small from the start, and before our first draft pick can even walk away in free agency, find ourselves staring down the barrel of economic non-viability again.

I see why you lost your election.

I go to the dome a fair bit but I usually just drink and don't spend much on snacks but what are these flam'n hotdogs you speak of? I enjoy spicy snacks.

They built an arena, the NHL wanted to expand west (Vegas, Seattle) my guess is they'll be in on the next round of expansion. Funny you use the "omg big arena no nhl team so it's empty" line then you point to Quebec, which has Videotron Centre and stays active.

I'm not even totally against funding going to this project through the city and the province, it's just utterly hilarious that the deal is worse for the tax payer than it was four years ago. Multiple times over
