Nevertheless, he's had 5 straight rounds between 78 and 82 this week, and all 6500-6700 tees. He's an athletic kid who was the top starting pitcher on his travel baseball team and during his 5th round of golf broke down into tears saying he was never going to be able to get good at this if he kept having to go to baseball practice. He quit a few weeks later and played 1-3 round pretty much every day since.

I'm getting curious to see how this turns out for him. He's started playing in some competitive tournaments and is quite a bit behind the really good juniors who've been playing since they were much younger, but he's progressing quickly.

I had to search out when I posted this to see when it was, since he just shot his first even par 18 today. 7 months later, and about 2 years and a month after playing his first round.

Again, pardon the dad bragging, but I don't have many real life friends who know too much about golf these days! Even more impressive to me, is he was even par going to the 16 tee two days ago and went double/bogey/double for a 77. That would have scarred me for years

Getting a bit irritated at how difficult it is to get tee times at Calgary courses on the weekends... I'm up and on the site right away but I guess they're just all taken by members as there's nothing before the evening, ever. Lynx, Inglewood, Valley Ridge, Winston... zilch. Just a total wash. I was hoping that last weekend was a bit of an anomaly with lots of golfers going for few spots as a lot of places weren't yet open but that's no longer the case and it's still impossible apparently. Played in Chestermere last week and it looks like I'll have to schlep down to DeWinton this week.

You'll find that early tee times (7am-9am) are not yet available do to frost delay issues, so all the early morning member players are having to book later into the morning and everything else is getting pushed back. I would hope that once courses are able to open all tee times, things will become better for you. I also believe the courses that are part of the other types of "golf plans" open tee time bookings for these players after members but before general public. Where I play members can book 8 days out, Golf Plan is 7 days out and public is 6 days out. Maybe try looking at courses that are not part of one of these other promotions, or perhaps look at buying one of those green fee discount cards??

Well, I'm with VIPgolf, so I've already committed. The lower fees are nice but it doesn't give much of a leg up when it comes to booking times, with only a couple of exceptions. It's a fair point about the early tee times.

It's actually surprising you love your 3 iron as you don't golf a ton.
3 irons are very difficult to hit well, which is why so many sets are going to hybrids, especially for mid-high handicap players.
You should try out a couple 3/4 hybrids and you may actually like then a lot more than your 3 iron.
My set came with a 4h and it's such as great club for many different situations. They're also good from the tees as a fairway finder.

Played serenity last Sunday in under 3 hours. 2 of us walking as the first tee time of the morning. Great way to play golf.

I have played Shag after work a few times this week. I was surprised how decent of shape it is in for a city course, especially early season. For the $15 early season evening rate and living close by it is hard to go wrong.

I'm an ok golfer and can hit about 200-220 off the tee on a good day.

My buddies are younger, longer hitters and always insist we play from the blues.

I'm much more comfortable and have way more fun from the whites. It's getting to the point where I don't want to play with them anymore. Unless of course I can figure out how to get 20 or 30 yards more off the tee, which I don't see happening.

No rule that says you all have to play from the same tees. Play the tees you want to play. Its about enjoying yourself after all.

Exactly - play the tees that are appropriate for your distances. Just be sure you are ready to move ahead and hit at the whites after your friends hit off the blues to keep things moving.

If they rib you about it, tell them to play from the tips for the rest of the year and see how they feel about playing at the wrong tees all the time.

I've heard a number of ways to determine where someone should be teeing off, from handicap to driving distance to how far your average 5 iron goes compared to total course yardage, and so on. I play the blues because I hit my driver pretty far (note I didn't say "well") but based on my handicap I would be on the whites, at least by some people's measure.

I have the same problem on Men's Night. They always put me on the Blues when I play all year on the Silvers.
Doesn't help getting ridiculed by guys ten years younger than me. Even if I can hit perfect drives all night long I'm often left with around 175-185 in on par fours. Tough to make pars when that's your approach.

On a more positive note my course opens tomorrow and I have times on Saturday, Sunday and Monday!!

I always thought it was based on handicap. At least that's what many scorecards suggest. That's how my mens league does it, and you can, and do, end up playing opponents from different tees.

We also do it by age though, which is stupid when you have a 70 year old 5 handicapper that can still hit it 275.

For regular games it's fine for seniors to play shorter tees even if they're good golfers, but when it's matchplay it should just be handicap (in my opinion).

I think the measure is supposed to be that you all hit the same club into the green from your landing place. So if I play Blues and have an eight iron in, and you play the back tees and also have an eight iron, we’re in the right tee box. That’s my understanding, from a design perspective.

This is what the USGA has really been pushing with their Tee it Forward stuff.

Here's that 5 iron distance to figure out which tees from golf.com.

Take your 5 iron distance multiplied by 36.

That will be the approximate yardage to play. Eg. 190 x 36 = play tees that make the course close to 6840 yards

You will find times but you just have to keep looking and multiple times a day. Those are some of the hardest to get on as well as a VIP holder. Valley Ridge is easy.
