Calgary downtown sucks . Around the Stadium sucks

For a city of our average income and size our downtown is a joke. Not saying this solves it , or that it couldn’t be done without a stadium , but if done right at least we’ll get some energy into the area
Why would a new arena provide anymore energy than the Dome? People will mainly go there when an event is on and leave unless 17th and Kensington start dying off.

CalgaryNext - shot down before the presentation ended.
Event Centre I - shot down because of Covid
Event Centre II - shot down by provincial election

Let’s face it, we are destined to announce arena deals every couple of years till a new sports district is built next to the Grey Eagle

Well I would've gone with transportation corridors as my #1a, with your #1 as my #1b...and I'd delete #2 because I can't name one arena anywhere that had that driver. I know that its in the rhetoric around the buildings to make it more palatable to fund them, but I can't say I know of any building that was built that way. Usually they try to make them the crown jewel in some new complex that ends up feeling like a mall food court on a tuesday at 3pm for 250 nights a year.

Not going to happen, no matter who wins the election

Really happy with the removal of 5th Ave to accommodate a larger footprint. The constraints from the previous design due to parcel size were very obvious and this will allow for more flexibility in designs. Looking forward to seeing the new style

Kinda funny reading comments how this is a vote grab by a political party when half (more?) of the people in this thread hate the deal.

They werent voting UPC anyways

That’s how vote buying works. You don’t worry about the people who already aren’t voting for you

If the government didn’t chip in they’d just blow it anyway on something crazy like a bullet train to Edmonton or in the case of the NDP, probably an Art museum to hold all the useless ugly art our city pays for. Let’s just enjoy the fact that things are in motion again.

Or a hospital. Or a cancer centre. Or a lab.

Damn you, NDP.

Some places are awesome. Petco Park for example.

Well, it would hopefully lead to us all not have to listen to you bitch and whine about how you will be paying for a new arena. Ask people in QC if they would be ok with a bump in taxes to have the Nordiques back. The funny thing is if it wasn't this it would be something else that would bump your taxes anyhow but you are too stupid to understand that. This is a great moment for the city of Calgary and Flames fans, I get you want to rain on the parade here but we would really appreciate that if you can't enjoy it you just shut your pie hole. Thanks.

That should tell you it was a bad idea as a vote grab, by a bad politician who is bad at everything she does. Except maybe refilling my drink, haven't visited her train car to pass judgment on that.

Oh, SW Ontario. You're not a tax payer, your opinion isn't valid. No, my pie hole won't shut, it'll be louder than ever. Deal with it.

Yes. If the billionaires aren't paying their own money, yes. #### them.

Also if they left someone else would, in fact, be here shortly thereafter to fill the void and would then pay their own money. I've no doubt. Or more likely the team would never leave and someone willing to pay for a new arena would simply buy it.

It's amazing how all the people who don't live and pay taxes here are the ones telling us they love it, and to shut up and deal with it.
