It’s a fair question to ask if you didn’t watch the press conference, but a dumb question to ask if you were in attendance.

Not hard to figure out the difference there.

Wouldn’t it be fair for both the city and the billionaire to get together to come to a deal that in the end benefits both?
That isn't what is happening in this scenario though and even then arenas and sports typically don't provide that much return to the city. It either doesn't drove revenue growth or just shifts spending.

Calgary signed the Edmonton arena deal today.

...and my estimate is Uncle Murray just pocketed $400m in value from Alberta tax payers and only has to stump up $40m today, with no new net jobs associated.

The fact that the outcome is tied to the election results is also amazing.

So the surrounding businesses, hotels, and condos they want to build next to the arena are not going to be subject to property and business taxes?

1.2 BILLION DOLLARS?!

Waiting with baited breath to see if Notley says she won't go through with this if elected; that'd seal my vote. Oh, who am I kidding, it's already sealed. Man, this is just so, so dumb.

Besides the fact Danielle Smith literally brought up the election.

I'm still cynical.

This was a hurry-up job initiated by a desperate provincial government, one that also harbours some enmity for municipal figures. Some Easter eggs buried in this agreement that'll stink when they break open.

Not saying it’s incorrect , but do we have anything more recent then 2001

Calgary downtown sucks . Around the Stadium sucks

For a city of our average income and size our downtown is a joke. Not saying this solves it , or that it couldn’t be done without a stadium , but if done right at least we’ll get some energy into the area

After they ran into significant cost overruns with tunneling through DT and under the Bow in 2019, they revised the Beltline segment so it follows 11th Ave. Though at that time, they were planning the station by 4th Street, so it seems like they shifted it one street over now.

Green is the revised 2020 route.

They aren't building in an area that needs to be revitalized though. How many new condos, hotels, and businesses do you think this will actually generate that the Saddledome has not? It just shifts entertainment spend for the most part. If the Flames wanted to clean up the site where they wanted Calgary Next and contribute some money then maybe I'd could get behind that train of thought more but at the end of the day the CSEC is getting a new arena and development rights for 40 million dollars upfront.

I hope the UCP get wrecked for this. Socialism for a billionaire.

Ever been to an arena district in another city? They're always dead. The place you're craving is a strip with entertainment, restaurants and bars. Arenas typically cause dead patches because they're enormous buildings.

I'm not sure I'm understanding this viewpoint. You know the billionaires aren't paying their own money, it's hilarious to suggest that. So it's either this or no team.

So you are saying you'd rather have no team?

Arenas are built in 2 places

1. Where land is cheap - and it’s just an arena
2. Walking distance to bars and restaurants

The area around the Saddledome isn’t dead because it’s taking up a lot of space . It’s dead because theres very few places to even eat dinner in walking distance , and no where to go after the game except the Casino

Cities should buy the teams if civic pride is the driver. At least then when they stump up for a building they see the benefit of it.
