The last time a politician and the flames tried to make a flames arena an election issue the people crushed the politician.
Calgary is interesting in that it might be the mythical land of the fiscal conservative socially liberal voter. Or at least voters who think that’s what they are. If there is a project that is the opposite of that mindset it’s government money subsidizing an arena.
The deal needs to be seen as a good deal between the province and the city and the team. It needs to have more private dollars in terms of % than the Edmonton deal and it can’t look like an outright corporate subsidy. It will actually be a tricky deal to craft well to make it a political benefit.
The ANDP takes Edmonton for granted (rightly or wrongly) The UCP have backed them into a corner and they'll support whatever the arena deal is. I'd bet money on it.

The beautiful thing about elections is you never actually have to deliver on anything you promise. The NDP would be morons to not just say they'll match the UCP's vote buying attempt, but come over the top with offering even more.

So how does this work if there is a change in provincial leadership? Is there risk that the deal gets scrapped?
It could happen that it gets cancelled, just like the Red Deer Hospital expansion did the last time Notley got elected. But we will have to wait and see.
The arena will be tank shaped, a hint that the team needs to tank.
So the Edmonton Public Library?

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.
