Puck wasnt near anyone because it had gone out of play.

Not sure how anyone can claim it was clean....maybe a bit more grey to call it dirty, but by the book i have to believe it should have been 5 and a game.

I can’t wait to hear the explanation how that was not a major. Puck out of play, shot made from the hashmarks and no contact until the corner. It’s frustrating as a fan because your top scorer takes a cheap shot, but isn’t a household name. If someone does that to Makar it’s no question it’s a 5. Garbage inconsistent reffing

Dumb hit and worth the 2 minute minor. I really don't agree with those who say it should be a major though, the result sucks with McCann getting hurt but, aside from the lateness, that is a hit thrown every single game and considered clean.

That’s the point right there. The lateness is what makes it a penalty. The lateness means McCann is not expecting it and thus injury. It’s a predatory play

The effective wording in the rule is "based on the degree of violence". The hit itself was routine and no more violent than any standard body check. 2 minutes for it being a late, but otherwise normal check makes sense.
