I had not heard Darryl was dealing with any family issues. Thats news to me.
Also the talk must have gone down (as did the internal audit) as Maloney is already out of town.

Rich Winter on with Francis really hammering home how Alberta is perceived by players.
Notes that it’s particularly tough for Calgary - no history of winning in the last decade, rough climate, players don’t see the benefits of family-first communities, so the only way Calgary can attract players in this era is by overpaying on contracts - and you can’t do that in the salary cap era and find success.
Says Toronto and Edmonton have given themselves a chance due to drafting McDavid and Matthews, players who attract other players.
Says Calgary needs to find a “cool” factor. A new arena won’t be enough.
My take? Unsurprisingly - this organization needs to rebuild and get some foundational players that really put life into it. They need those #1 overall players, they need Wolf to become a vezina quality goalie - and they need to stay the hell out of free agency, because it’s a poison pill.
We are at a disadvantage and to overcome that we need everything within the teams control to be first class. So having things go this sour is a hell of a pain point. How is this team perceived league wide right now? Has to be near the worst, if not the worst situation in the league. Yeah, who cares about Arizona’s small arena - it’s still Arizona vs. Calgary, and Winter really hammered on just how poorly the cities up here are viewed.

Maloney in the presser said something about Darryl attending to a family thing that's why they couldn't talk until later in the week. I inferred it was something minor-ish like an appointment but who knows.

How do you land a Matthews or McDavid if Wolf is indeed Vezina calibre...

A good question, but isn’t that the pain of the Calgary Flames? No big picture view, ever. Always trying to make do with whatever they have, and needing to fill key positions through trades/free agent signing.
Unwilling to be patient and really pay the price for what it takes to be more than what they are.

100%. I just think any idea that the team is "stuck" with Sutter because of his contract is false. Not hard to put together some estimates that could point to firing Sutter as a better financial decision overall.

I agree the Flames have terrible luck and timing that's for sure, but can you imagine if Tkachuk and Gadreau both were signed and then Wolf comes in like we all hope he will? I think that was the plan and it wasn't a bad one, but the universe had other ideas.

I wonder if the Flames fanbase could have the patience for a full rebuild. Any time the topic gets brought up here, it seems like about half the people don't want it. Attendance would probably go down temporarily. That isn't a Calgary thing, it typically happens in every market if there is a long period of poor results. For the owners, it might be a difficult pill to swallow when at the same time, they are trying to prove the worth of the Flames to the City for arena negotiations. It's probably easier to negotiate when hype and support of peaking. Obviously that backfired this year.

Neither Toronto nor Edmonton got their high picks as a result of some patient overarching plan.

It doesn’t need to be a Matthews or McDavid-level player. But the bottom line is the Flames need to draft extraordinarily well. Players don’t generally want to come to Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg or Ottawa without a big overpayment.
So the only way to get really good players on decent contracts is by drafting well. It sucks, but with FA, players are going to want to go to big, exciting markets or warm-weather markets.

Broader than our sample size at Calgarypuck, I'd say probably not. But I suppose that's how you define 'fanbase', because pretty casual folks are out on the team. I think my parents only watched the 6-5 Dallas game in January because I wanted to watch it. We've chatted about the firing last week etc. But they're my measuring stick for casual fan that only really get behind the team in the post season.

Yup this has been my growing realization as well. If wolf is what we hope he is, this team won't be able to commit to a rebuild for the next decade. The window for that was 21/22(last season), 22/23 and 23/24.
At this point I think you have to try and retool younger. Move out all the 30+ 2024 UFAs for guys under 24, prospects and 2023 picks and hope you hit some breakouts. I'm starting to think it's too late for a rebuild and you might ruin wolf if you do.

Weird part is attracting players isn't really an issue.
Markstrom, Tanev, Coleman, Kadri were all top Free Agents in their UFA years.
Issue was that two guys ditched the team they were drafted by.

Pay what price? Intentionally ice a bad team so you can have a lottery ball chance at drafting a mcdavid or matthews? What happens when the lottery ball doesn't come through? How would you ensure that your drafting high next year? Should they trade Wolf now and don't ask for any really good players in return because he's not getting you a Makar or Matthews. And while you're doing that, somehow convince players that this is the place to be.
Pretty hard to plan on sucking, win the lottery and make the team look desirable.

Yes. Calgary drafted the second best player in the Matthews draft. A guy who is at least top 4 in the 2011 draft. Both left.
Calgary did have, for a decent amount of time, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Monahan, Lindholm, Hanifin on good contracts - all guys who were high draft picks or would be in a redraft. They didn’t get good goaltending with all those pieces and/or those pieces didn’t win at the right time.
