I was actually just about to post both of those stories.

It's freaky to know that making one small little mistake can lead to getting shot. I have a family member that got lost in rural Tennessee on a road trip and pulled up to a house, and the person came out holding a rifle. she hightailed it out of there right away.

Is “The Purge” just based on current US gun laws?

I was reading that apparently they got into the wrong car, realized it very quickly and left. Got into the right car and the guy from the first car got out, approached them and shot them. So it's not a "oh gosh, I'm so threatened".

It's like the car that pulled into the wrong driveway. Apparently there was another car and motor cycle that pulled in because they were following each other to the same house. The motor cycle and one car had already left, and the third car was in the process of leaving when the guy started shooting. Like, they were already going, but the guy had to shoot them anyway just for daring to enter his property. Gotta stand your ground!

It’s crazy that it seems like they need a PSA that says shooting someone in the back as they’re retreating is not in the spirit of “stand your ground”.

The US is really messed up.
They have a real problem going on, where mass shootings are legit normal now. That is so crazy to me, nothing is done about it, people just move on until the next one happens.
The only developed nation on earth that has had a mass shooting every single year for the past 20 years.

Regular mass shootings are a uniquely American phenomenon. The US is the only developed country where mass shootings have happened every single year for the past 20 years, according to Jason R. Silva, an assistant professor of sociology and criminal justice at William Paterson University.

On the positive side of things, if that CNN article had a chart with a comparison of "thoughts and prayers" per 100,000 people, the US would be the runaway leader!

What an effed up country, 2 cheerleaders getting into the wrong car is supposed to be the start of a cheesy 70's porno, I mean I'm 61 and even I would think that was my lucky day not a reason to start shooting

Yeah. That part of the story is baffling. I wonder if there was more to it, like maybe there was a large verbal exchange with the girls insulting him? Maybe the shooter was so blitzed out of his mind he had no idea what was going on.
I can't imagine a scenario where someone thinks that a 110 lbs female inadvertently pulling at your car door is threatening.

Another one:
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65325867
This time a man and his 6 year old child were both shot after they went to retrieve a basketball that rolled into a neighbour's yard.

We need to figure out how to get guns into the hands of basketballs.

If you watch Fox News, the country is in shambles and everyone is trying to steal everything, car jack everyone, and break into your home. It's happening everywhere and brave people are taking a stand with guns and they're not getting charged because of "stand your ground" laws. It's your patriotic duty to shoot someone who is trying to break into your home or car. In fact, someone is probably trying to do it right now!

I'm fine with shooting someone breaking into your home. Castle laws are the one thing from the US I wish we had here. Your home is not "just stuff", like someone stealing your car is. Someone breaking in destroys your sense of safety and well being in your most personal space.

Yeah nah.
I'm not in favour of any laws that flat out allows the shooting of people.
I say this as never having been broken into, but it is just stuff. While I don't doubt that it affects you going forward, does it affect you more or less than having taken someone's life or crippled someone.

Nah, it's not just stuff when it's in your house. The consequences for invading someone's home should be extreme. If you don't want to potentially lose your life, or be crippled, don't break into someone's home.
People who confront an intruder shouldn't have to play instant psychologist to determine how far they're willing to go and how much force is reasonable. #### that.

Respectfully I think you are wrong.
I may very well be proven incorrect by data, but I feel like those laws don't move society towards being more peaceful.

I'm not really concerned with how it affects crime rates. I'm concerned with people's ability to protect themselves and their families in their houses to the fullest.

I'm concerned about cavalier attitudes to taking someone's life or mobility.
