Huberdeau and Weegar kicking in eat up a fair bit of the new cap space. Hopefully that pushes more ELCs into the lineup.
I do think Vladar will be gone for opening day.

Cap wise they'd be OK if Backlund and Lindholm were to stay and Vladar and Kylington are moved out. Insert some youth on ELCs. I'm just wary of who they'd get to fill those pretty massive losses if Backlund & Lindholm go.

Would hate to move Kylington. He’s exactly what the team needs on the back end. Hope he comes back and wants to remain a Flame.

I actually think Backlund and Lindholm are both back. The garbage bag day comments are made on a day when everyone is a bit raw. Given a few weeks of R&R and they may have a more positive mind frame. BUT that pushes the problem a year.

I could see it too. The mandate is playoffs. And this franchise has no problem deferring these issues and rolling the dice.
I just want Wolf in next season. Dammit Darryl give me that at least.

Pretty hard to lose your two best forwards each year and remain competitive.

I have a feeling they talk Backlund away from the ledge but Lindholm leaves.

Lindholm is the far more likely one. He can expect a raise as a UFA. I don’t know that Backlund gets more than he does now, and if so, why move your family that’s been here all this time.

I think everyone focused on him essentially saying stuff about being on a contender.

Kind of a red flag.
Just like no one ponying up the dough to woo Kadri's camp in the initial weeks, except for the Isles who had to move contracts first but didn't.
Maybe the Flames should pay attention to that, and ask why a guy who's available isn't a hot commodity.
|
Not entirely accurate. There was a bidding war for Hamonic.
The Leafs had offered their 1St and JVR, who had one year left on his deal. Apparently the Islanders preferred the Leafs deal but there was some issue with either getting a hold of JVR or JVR exercising his NTC.

Lindholm sounds like he's gone the moment his contract expires. The problem with Backlund is that either he has an issue with the coach, wants a chance to play for a Stanley Cup, or both. He's 34 years old and has never seen the 3rd round of the playoffs in his entire career and that has to wear on him. As crazy as it would be to move out 2 of your top 3 centers it's looking like that may be the prudent action here. You could trade one at the draft and one at the deadline but there's always the risk of injury impeding a trade in season as well as the temptation to hold on to him if the team is in the playoff race and go down the path of Gaudreau again that left the Flames with the void of their franchise player gone and no assets recouped. There's some really, really difficult decisions sitting on the plate of the new GM. It's clearly in the best interests of the organization in the long term to move both at the draft but this organization has never operated in that manner under Edwards.

Hamonic was available for a long time. So did Neal, Kadri and Brouwer
Treliving overpaid for all of them. Probably outbidding himself

Even in a rebuild there’s room for a guy like Backlund IMO. You can’t run with all kids and Backlund famously helps players, including rookies, who are on his line.
I was speaking more to the notion they both want out. I suspect that a lot of that was garbage day talk which will be walked back, especially with Backlund, whose next contract may be his last, and who has played his whole career here. No doubt his wife is embedded in the community as well. Plus, no one will pay him more elsewhere. Lindholm - that’s a different story. He’s already moved once and he will make more as a UFA than here on an extension. Backlund is a guy who might be more valuable at the TDL than the draft though, when some teams are looking for that experienced, well rounded guy to give them a push.

He was available for a long time because the ask was too high for most teams. Leafs and the Flames at the end had the worst pro scouting on him overly focusing on his career season in 14/15 ignoring that his play declined year over year after as he came off a flat out abysmal season for the Islanders when the Flames pulled the trigger on the trade.

I find it hard to believe Treliving out bid himself.
Even if he did, how would you know that? All due respect but I don’t think you know what was on the table for any of the players you mention. I believe Kafri himself said he could have signed for more elsewhere. Columbus and the NYI were reportedly interested.
You’re offering an empty critique. And it’s also premature to label Kadri’s signing as a ‘bust’ if that’s the word you want to use.

He's reportedly asked to be traded a few times. Unless those rumours are bunk it really appears he and his family are ready to turn the page on Calgary.

I heard he asked once, and then took it back. Which might just indicate the opposite. I suspect it was when Kadri was signed and he was looking at a “demotion” to 3C. Not good for the stats and his next contract. But the way it worked out he ended up with a greater season and with Huberdeau on his line.

I do believe he has asked to be traded during the last two off seasons. The question is whether he cancelled those requests at some stage.
The Flames will need to cut some cap space this off season, and the players who go will depend entirely on which of the many UFA's to be will not resign with them.
And of course a number of the lesser ones the Flames likely have no interest in bringing back.
