You work the patrol boat? Oh man, that's gotta have so many funny moments! I'm out there occasionally with my Laser, and I just love watching the newbs.

When changing out your winters, has anyone actually re torqued after 50km?

My tire shop always recommended after 100 KM. I have my own torque wrench with sockets that fit my vehicle's lugs (and won't scratch my wheels).

They are insane. To the point where the rare deep snow days are probably the most fun I have driving all year. Truly incredible control in bad conditions.

I bought a Mazda 3 Turbo AWD this year and ran Michelin X-Ice tires on it, which tests neck and neck with the Hakka. I've never had more fun driving in the snow, whenever we got a heavy dump I'd go out on late night joyrides bombing around the unplowed side streets. Turned winter driving from a chore into something I'll actually miss in summer

Having good tires made me hate snowplows. Always ruining my good time

I always retorque for peace of mind. That said, I'd argue it's really not required for aluminum wheels at "normal" torque - they never seem to loosen. The steel wheels at 140 ft-lbs however - sometimes they'll take a full turn after 100km.

I do as well, but I have a torque wrench. I’ll put it off a bit in the fall if we hit a cold snap right after I change them. I don’t have a heated garage or Canada Goose coat, and the tools get so cold (see, weather related discussion).

Last time I got new tires at a shop I noticed the “must come back after 50km to re torque” note on the receipt and thought, pffft, no one’s driving back for that. Could be wrong.

Oh yeah, I'd never drive back for that. I don't think anyone does. And all those tire swaps that don't go back is the proof you need that it's not needed. Haha

It's looking like early May for me as the long term forecast shows temperatures getting up to and above average at the beginning of May.

This is where having 2 vehicles is a very nice luxury. The car got the summer tires swapped on a few weeks ago so we drive that when it's warm. The SUV stays with winters and only comes out when the temperature dips or if we get another snow dump. I'll probably swap those after May long

What do you use as a rule of thumb weather barometer for inclement weather then? Most of have better luck tracking weather in the Calgary area via pot holes, ice/snow and construction. The tires are an excellent weather barometer in our region.

I'm also weird in that if it's +5C or above, I open the sun roof. I love the fresh air. It smells so good after stagnant air in the office or at home. If I'm a little chilly, I'll compensate using the seat warmer.

On a side note, I really wish there was a way to have more colored vegetation year round in Calgary. The yellows, browns and greys kinda suck right now. Blue lens sunglasses, amazing. It helps a ton from a mood booster POV personally.

More red or yellow coral dogwoods grown in different areas by the roads would be nice. Some areas are just grass with a random tree or two growing there. I get that it's a little bit of a pain to manage in the summer (ie: Mowing around bushes and trees). I'm just saying more year round colors would be nice. Horticultural graffiti movement anyone?

Hell, I'd be cool with more spray paint art in areas to do the same thing.

I love a little snow and sleet in the spring.
