Owners have input. But this one obviously is more involved than he probably should be.
Fact that Sutter and Treliving got extension offers at the same time in the Fall says a lot. Order of operations at least optically should be Treliving is extended first by Murray and then Treliving extends Sutter.

Did it 'END' in 2016? They didn't win a single playoff game for the next 4 years.
2022 was their next playoff win.

I think they took away Treliving’s coach hiring rights after all the misses he had. Although I recall back when Sutter was hired, Treliving said that they had reached out to Sutter before Ward was promoted but Sutter wasn’t ready to join at that point. So I am not sure he was just an Edwards hire to begin with.

Given how things have worked out for us generally, I’m waiting for Tree to take a GM job somewhere and then ultimately be regarded as an all time GM after his Stanley Cup filled tenure. Then 10 years from now I’ll be extremely furious.

I look forward to Treliving going to Toronto.
And then we trade Lindholm & Tanev to Toronto for Sam Lafferty, Connor Timmins, and John Tavares or something like that.

Silence from Sutter is interesting. Would have expected some availability by the point?

Him and Edwards don't have to speak to the media if they don't want to.

After the season that Tkachuk had under Sutter? Idunno man. I get that we are dealing with a primadonna personality, but he was in full pout baby suck mode when Sutter arrived. Whether he likes it or not, Sutter helped transform him. Then to not have any self awareness and ask him to be turfed because it's too hard? Pretty rich stuff. I wouldn't let a player dictate like that if that is truly why he wanted out... Not convinced

I'm holding out Sutter is using the last couple days with his family to decide on stepping away.

How much was Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk's success because of Sutter...or how much was because they knew having great seasons was maybe the easiest way to get away from Sutter.
More and more it's feeling like the latter to me.
I'm not sure we can give Sutter credit for Tkachuk and Gaudreau having such a great season. I'm sure some of his system helped, but to me that feels more like it's 80% them and 20% Sutter at this point.

I think there's an element that he might have added to their game that you can give him credit for, but by no means did they achieve what they did solely because of him.
If you go back and look at that season, they played OUTSIDE his system and played a strong east/west, cross seam, high skill zone entry and pressure system. The exact opposite of Sutter's hard nose north/south, low percentage shooting system and alas look what happened.
I think the same needs to be done for Huberdeau to blossom here, you have to build around his strengths and let him get back to 100+ points. He put up 115 points playing primarily with Duclair and Bennett, the same Bennett flames fans had given up on entirely for being awful in the regular season.
Like most of us expected out of the gate here, you would think Huberdeau and Lindholm would have clicked for some big points this year, but for whatever reason after 5 games Sutter squashed that and forced Huberdeau into a uncreative bland brand of hockey.

If this is even remotely true (which seems ridiculous) why would the team want to retain any of these players reported to want out? If they can't handle some adversity from their coach, they aren't going to be able to push themselves far enough to win a cup.
Maybe it's just me getting old, but toughness is required physically AND mentally and it seems that too many of these big names on the Flames roster don't seem willing or able to push through much adversity at all.

People unwilling to give credit to sutter for '22 sound the same to me as people unwilling to critique him in '23.

If the rumour is true that Tre could have fired him then he is probably waiting to see where he lands with the new GM before saying anything.
