I, however, don't see how that happens with Sutter coaching. Maybe just have the GM straight up tell Sutter that's what he's working with, and not sign any vets. Lewis, Lucic, and Ritchie are all gone, which is a huge start to forcing Sutter's hand on playing the youth.

Wolf!
Goaltending basically stopped them from being a top team despite everything else going poorly

I don't think Edwards even speaks at the CNRL annual meetings and investor days. It's just not his thing

Sure, but it's consolation I'm sure. But I wouldn't wanna be stuck in a place that is doing the oppositive of what I thought it was when I signed up.
I'm less inclined to hate on the players salaries when you consider Murray Edwards is swimming it Scrooge McDuck style at a castle in Switzerland.

He’s only responsible insofar as he’s the GM. Gaudreau didn’t even know what he was doing himself, and by all accounts made up his mind months and months after Treliving could do anything about it. You wanted him to trade Gaudreau the year before his big season? Or at the TDL in a year where they were 4th favorite to win the cup according to Vegas (after Gaudreau’s 3 team NTC kicked in)?
Yes, the Neal signing had fallout. But I doubt he would have (or any GM would have) offered Tkachuk more than 7 per year at the time.

I actually get a little bit of the poor Maloney part, he was in a tough spot, but you also need someone who is in hockey ops (and they picked the person who's making the next big hockey decision for the Flames, which is the right call) to speak to future hockey questions.
I'm not sure why Edwards and the owners would pay Bean to be president, if they have to come in and do all the media avail when things aren't going well.
The narrative is hilarious. The people running the club, are there speaking to the club, and the fans want the owners. But the fans also feel the owners are too involved. This narrative that the owners are running everything, but then just throw their puppets up on stage when things go bad is completely unfounded, and to be honest a little ridiculous.

Sorry it has been explained to you multiple times how this is not a contradiction.
I am glad you have faith in the people this organization has in place right now and will put in place. I wish I felt that way.

I think they'd be hard pressed to have a much worse year than this one. If Markstrom and Huberdeau play the whole season like the did the last 20 games, the team could be in the playoffs.
That said, it's going to take a lot more than that to get my interest back in the team. There's already hardly anyone left that I care much about. Losing Backlund and Looch is going to make me have even fewer.

Generally you wouldn't let the guy who just was hired on to be your president of hockey ops be the one answering the questions about why the guy he is replacing left.
It's just my take but the rumor was Edwards in town as part of these changes...and IMO he should have been there today.
|
Maloney was promoted from Vice President of Hockey Ops to President of Hockey Ops. He didn’t replace Treliving (outside of being the one who is handling his duties while they find his replacement).
He wasn’t “just hired.” He’s been with the organization - and presumably above Treliving in the org chart - for almost 6 years.

Let's be glad it's Maloney heading the GM search and not Bean.

I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable saying Maloney was above Tre on the org chart. It was always my understanding that Tre was the one who brought in Maloney.

Oh I am not hating on the players. I just think they knew the trade off for security was they'd be in Calgary until the end of their contracts. Even at a ppg Hubderdeau is expensive and ebest case is the first 4 years of that contract are decent and the last four are a gradual slide to awful. Huberdeau's contract is worst in the league territory if he doesn't bounce back to a ppg next season.

I would disagree. Moreso on the business side of things. Is he a great negotiator? Is he a great talent evaluator? Can he set up his staff to effectively provide him the information he needs to be successful? Does he ultimately know what it takes to be successful as an executive? A lot of questions the way I look at it. I just wonder if he’s a people pleaser vs an astute negotiator. Hard to tell.

I'm with you. Some of the coaching decisions last year were baffling. Not shortening the bench and continuing to roll out the 4th line in every game situation? Not building a PP that takes advantage of one of the best passers in the game? Leaving youth in the pressbox, OT lineups, roster decisions, goaltending decisions, the list goes on.
Bizarre year.

I'm surprised to most of the reaction here, this is good news to me.
Brad's a good guy and did some good things, but ultimately his legacy here will have some major negatives and I'm exciting for a new direction.
Whether or not ownership gets anyone better and gives them the mandate to make hard decisions, we will see.

You’re right, after ten years as an AGM it’s probably fair to ask if Conroy has acquired literally any skills that would make a good GM or even AGM. Great.

it's not Tre leaving in isolation, it's the general direction that this organization is taking with Tre leaving, Sutter staying and "rebuild" being a no-no word.

Nah, I agree. IMO adequate goaltending and the same performance by skaters gets them into the POs easily. Good goaltending plus a better showing by Huberdeau/Mangiapane/Kadri and maybe Lindholm makes them dangerous. Good/great goaltending (Wolf) plus good performances by the skaters, plus the injection of youth = who knows what’s possible? They are still missing a generational type player, but those come with their own issues cap-wise.

Lol based on what?
Tre gave Tkachuk a 3 year deal and let Gaudreau go to UFA

Yeah Treliving was GM and PoHO in everything but title.
I've heard that since KK and Burke left that the chain of command for hockey ops has pretty much been Treliving directly to Edwards.
Which is why it being Maloney and Bean on that stage today the issue.
