Any big 4th line grinders on the Rebels eligible for the draft this year? 16th overall baby!!!!

This is going to be awesome!

It's really not going to be awesome
I have from a good source that Sutter regretted being GM and would hate to hold that position again on any team.

Is Futa a serious candidate or is there something in the background that makes him unhireable?

Sure Conroy was/is a nice guy and a good player, neither of those have anything to do with being a good GM.
If you're in a tough negotiation for a contract or trade he just doesn't seem like the guy
Is that the role of today's GM though? I'm not saying it is or it isn't, but you can have AGM's that can handle a lot of that stuff while the GM is truly the architect of the team as well.

The one thing you can give to Conroy is that he's paid his dues, knows what it's like in an NHL dressing room, and certainly absorbed a lot of what you shouldn't do when running a team lol. With Feaster and Treliving it seems at times there has been to much of the go get good players mindset, without enough of the do they fit what we're doing here.

I don't see Iginla coming to Calgary, but if he did, it would just be to ride Conroy's coattails amirite?

Also, he's now living in Kelowna. It's clear he wanted to move closer to home, but not too close.

Don't know if the next guy will be better or worse (probably worse) but this team has been treading water for years under Treliving. Change was needed.

What has Craig Conroy done to deserve the GM job? Tenure? We just promoted a guy who should have been kicked out the door, we shouldn't do a second.

There's only one redeeming thing that can happen now: Full and complete rebuild. Rip it down.
I agree - Tear this thing down to the studs. You can keep a guy like Huby around (he's untradeable). Get rid of Kadri, Lindholm, Backlund, Toffoli, etc. Load up on picks and lets have some fun for once in a long while. Rip it down! Rip it Down!

What has Don Maloney done to earn his job as PoHO?

Maloney probably won't be acting GM long enough to actually pull off a lot of trades, but here is a list of the trades he made when he was GM of the Coyotes:

https://www.capfriendly.com/staff/don-maloney/trades

Nothing much of consequence either actually. A lot of typical Coyote transactions.

Draft record looks pretty average as well. Some hits and misses, but nothing out of the ordinary either way IMO.

I wonder if Tre was offered president of hockey ops and said no? While it was probably time to move on , it’s not a good look when a person with his calibre rather not be here at all.

I would rather Iggy join forces with Ryan Reynolds on the quest for franchise ownership.

I understand the concern, but nine years is a good run. He did a lot of good things and a lot of bad things.

The timing and uncertainty this creates in a very important off season is a concern.

But IMO BT was 'league average' at his job. Maybe it was ownership, but I doubt the bad contracts were the result of a heavy hand from Edwards.

I'm actually excited to see a change in direction.

I’m not usually pessimistic when it comes to the Flames, but this stinks. Really feels like they are choosing Sutter over Treliving.

I’m going to be down on this for a long while unless they can pull a Tulsky some other rabbit out of their hat.

Tough negotiators don't have to be curmudgeonly ol' bastards, a tough negotiator can be a nice guy but the key is to be assertive and firm.

The way it stands it really feels like Sutter won the power struggle, which giving him the extension before Treliving never made sense and IMO contributed to the issues this year.

In the end the issue I think that remains is that Edwards does not give his GM autonomy to do their job - and in the end I bet that is the reason Treliving didn't want to re-sign.
I think the timing of their existing contracts was unfortunate. They purposely only gave Sutter 2.5 years initially - that’s a very short contract for a HC. And he won the Adams in year 1 (not counting the end of the half season), so they were almost forced to give an extension, and 2 years is as short of an extension as you could imagine in that situation. I think at the time, Treliving and Sutter were not at odds and they even figured on Gaudreau and Tkachuk likely extending (IIRC the Sutter extension was before those two decided to leave). I think the team in that situation thought Treliving would extend sometime in the last season.

Well that was my inference in the first part of my second sentence. Sutter may not be GM, but it might be in title only. Clearly he has too much influence on direction.

Treliving was not the reason this team was treading water

Francis on with Marek:

"Darryl Sutter will be the Head Coach of this team in the fall for sure."

"This news today tells me management chose the coach over the GM"
