The number of things that went wrong or can be attributed to chance is staggering.
I call and raise you a The Flames had one of the fewest man games lost of all teams this season. We got about all we could ask for as far as injuries/man games lost go minus the Kylington stuff.

Average age of the Flames top 6 scoring forwards if they all come back next year is 30.2. Only one player under the age of 28. Only team that can compete with that average age is Boston at 31.2, but they have 3 of their top six under the age of 28.

Oldest forward core group in the league really going forward unless they make some changes.

Either way all of this is interesting. We've always said this team would have to be dragged kicking and screaming into a re-build.

Maybe that's happening.
Not a bad thing.
So far, I think that this has been a very good day for the health of the team.

Huby, Weegs are both committed long-term and are acting like it. Willing to be critical of themselves and figure out a path forward (...while also openly hoping for a new arena).

Lindholm, Backs - two of the biggest question marks around this team, being pretty transparent with (perhaps) their desire to move on. That's good - the team needs to leverage both of those players into significant asset returns and the team likely has a pretty clear understanding of that.

Marky owned it too.

If Hanifin can be as transparent as Backs and Lindy...I mean, that's Hanifin, Backlund, and Lindholm potentially out this Summer. That's a good thing if this team wants to get younger and begin building something new.

I personally dont understand why everyone wants Hanifin gone. He's a young top 4 dman. What are you going to try to replace him with???
Or is it all money related to everyone?

It's Cap related based and the expected raise in light of Weegar's extension.

I do think it's a big assumption that they will move them this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if they keep them and then move them at the deadline.

And no that's not what I would do.

For me, it is a combo of thinking we could get a good package for him and not thinking he will be worth what his next contract is. But I would be fine with signing him. Guys I hope they trade are - Toffoli, Lindholm, Backlund over the summer and Tanev at the deadline or during the season.

If we move Hanifin that is good, if he signs for a decent price also good.

The worst thing that happened to this organization over the last few years was that Gaudreau and Tkachuk's poker faces had management convinced they had a good chance of of retaining the players. For this I'm glad that Backlund and Lindholm are being all business as management can face the facts and rid themselves of pie in the sky fantasies that they can hold on to them next season in hopes of convincing them to stay.

100%. As long as we don’t do something truly stupid and trade them for other forwards in their early 30’s it should be a positive.

I wonder how the previous contract negotiation went with Lindholm when he joined. I am guessing the Flames tabled a short term and long term offer and he chose long term. I do recall he fired his agent his first year as a Flame. He has been underpaid significantly through the last 5 years.

Let someone else pay him and now is the time to cash in. The Flames should absolutely be shopping a good portion of the pending UFA’s for next year. If Tanev and Toffoli want to stay and you can make it work then that’s nice. If Hanifin wants to stay at a number similar to Weegar’s then I would do that if he wants $8M then move him as well especially if Kylington is coming back.

I don’t think this is a complete tear down job but a massive retooling is what is needed

Lucic less so. Which is fine.

Can we move a Wranglers playoff thread to the FOI forum?

Should have something Flames centric still atop the FOI forum during playoffs.

Hanifin open about being interested in an extension. That surprises me a bit. Cool.

You sign Hannifin rebuild or not. The guy is young, hasn't crushed it so the contract could be reasonable, and he could be here for a long time with an answer like that.
