Totally, eh.
I enjoy the r/Christianity subreddit quite a bit and this week somebody asked if Mormons should be considered Christians. The resounding consensus was, no, they are not. Reasons cited sounded like an SNL sketch. "Real" Christians are offended that Mormons are so dumb to not believe that God is the one true god, but also he is actually three gods, which is obviously just one god. Like, they were critically looking at all the stupid claims in Mormonism with these total blinders on with respect to how ridiculous they sounded with their equally implausible takes on reality. It was a wild ride.

No. He was crazy as hell. All religious leaders are inherently so. I am suggesting that the people have softened on the whole “the government was right to take that heretic down” stance.

I think the Netflix show did humanize the cult somewhat without sugarcoating how weird it was that all the dudes let Koresh #### their wives. It also did kind of show how unnecessary attacking the compound was.
I took a New Religious Movements course in university and the Branch Davidians thing had just happened so we studied it a fair amount at the time. My religious studies prof was pretty upset they wouldn't let a religious studies scholar help defuse the situation. I don't know if I super agree with treating everyone's delusions with unlimited patience and resources, but it would have probably led to a more humane ending.
My take is nobody is a god (obviously) and anybody who thinks humans can be gods are pretty ignorant/dumb/rubes/dupes/dopes/you-name-it. I can see why law enforcement had enough of his #### and stormed in. Act like complete and total morons and those guys outside with tanks and guns are gonna #### you up, you tit. Still sad people died.

Wait. Really? Like there's several homes that visibly display flags like that?

Pro tip - if there's a violently tortured dying guy strung up with giant bolts on a cross as you walk into the building you're going to a super ####ed up institution and you should probably turn on the rational side of your brain and GTFO of that psychoness.

In Ontario or at least where I live - you can go to a Catholic high school that is built in the last 20 years and relatively modern or to public high school that was built 50-80 years ago. That's why most kids here go to these schools.. they are newer and less dungeon like.

I think that it is important when criticizing catholic schools to acknowledge that public schools are intrinsically protestant schools.

there's a place near me that has a Trump sign up. Not even the right country. So that's not a shocker in Alberta.

Rather I argue that public schools are culturally protestant. I would go so far as to say that most secularism in Canada upholds the sensibilities, attitudes, assumptions, and behaviors of Protestantism.
Public schools were at their foundation schools to teach protestant Canadians in English's, catholic schools to teach French Canadians. the assumption that protestant schools are purely secular and public is upheld by the assumption that Protestant culture is neutral and natural.
While I agree there is a separation in the outright religious nature of catholic vs public schools it is worth acknowledging that public schools shed the outright religious elements of Protestantism while maintaining the cultural elements.
Telal Asad's Formations of the Secular and David Martins The Religious and the Secular are great books on the subject.

Yeah, that documentary was interesting. I do think they could've avoided violence and it was mishandled. I don't know about the unlimited patience and such, but I'm a pacifist, so my runway for a peaceful solution is super long. I don't think that they really had to get in there and take care of this immediately for any particular reason.

Wait, what? I went to public school in Calgary in the '90s and early '00s and nobody said the Lord's prayer once.
Honestly the only time I can recall God ever being mentioned in all my years in public school was the "God keep our land" in the national anthem during assemblies.

My school said it every morning until 2009.
In Taber they did until 2013.

This shouldn't be a controversial thing to do, but sadly, they still have far too much control over our society.

I remember reciting God Save the Queen up until late Elementary School in the mid-90's. Definitely no religion in my school experience, though.

I keep hearing about people getting the robo-texts about the elections. I haven't received a single one yet... feeling kind of left out.

I was in Francophone school (catholic) growing up. We definitely had the lord's prayer and the national anthem during homeroom every day as part of announcements. Ended after junior high i think.
