Flames So about Kylington.

Any clue what his deal is? All I've heard is "No Timeline" well if his Timeline isn't by next season's camp he just needs to retire.

My heart goes out to him but this is beyond Hockey, the kids life is in a holding pattern over this "Personal Family Issue" and its sounding more and more like he just doesn't have the capacity for hockey. Which is fine, and he should do what's best for himself, but don't leave a billion dollar organization in the lurch like this.

I can't think of anywhere outside of pro-sports that he'd still be employed.

Maybe I'm an ####### but somebody eventually had to be one about this situation.

I meant it more like a big machine being held back by a relatively small (but important) cog.

You cannot think of any field where someone has significant value added to the point where they are one of the ~100 most effective options in the entire world at their job?

Many employers have short and long term disability plans for their employees.

You’ve had bad employers I guess?

it’s ok to be curious, and I don’t fault you for fishing. The answer is always going to be “none of your business” though.

He’ll return if and when he’s ready.

No. You are simply being an ######. What he's going through is none of our business and he can come back when he's ready. He doesn't work for the fans and your retirement ultimatum is ridiculous.

I don't see the harm in speculating. At this point, I'd be surprised if he was ever back in the NHL. It took him a long time to break into the League and now he just spent a year without competitive games or practices. He's probably taken a step or two back into being a marginal NHL player and he'll need a coach who's willing to put him in a position to succeed again. He can come back but I think the deck is stacked against them at this point.

He posted a training video on his instagram for the first time all season and he still looks to be in great shape.

I personally took that as a sign he will be back next year. We probably never will know what exactly the issue was, but that is his own personal choice. He left $2.5M on the table, so Im sure it wasnt an easy decision.

I'm impressed the Flames and everybody involved were able to keep a lid on this all season. Sure, people have speculated and poked around, but in this day and age, the Flames have done a great job protecting the player IMO.

I'm rooting hard for Oliver, whatever the circumstances. I hope the training video that was posted is a sign of him coming back next season.

I don’t see why they can’t put him on LTIR though. I’m sure his contract is insured. But if he’s incapacitated and not playing the team should be able to use his cap space.

He is.....i think since the trade DL at least.

Most contracts are not insured however.

If the NHL benefits package works the same way as other employers he would have been on STD for 28 weeks or so and moved to LTD after that and the insurance pays you a % of your salary. I know I got 33% of what I made

They can/could but didn’t because it wasn’t necessary.

Yeah but it depends on what his problem is

They don’t approve a lot of stuff

I am talking about regular job. Have no idea about the NHL

I thought they weren’t allowed to LTIR him. Maybe that changed.

I was genuinely surprised that we didn't hear some leaks about what was going on with him.

Cynically i figured it would find its way out there, whatever it was. Kudos to those in the know who kept this under wraps and let him deal with this as he saw fit.

From a hockey sense regardless of what training he’s doing alone he’s missed a year of development. He had just really broken in and still had a lot of warts to his game that were hidden by Tanev, I’m not overly optimistic about him returning and contributing in a meaningful manner.

It’s possible of course but I’d certainly temper my expectations about who he is as a player if he does choose to come back eventually.
