The best response I've seen so far is:
"Somehow, Rey Palpatine returned..."
I think corporate Disney invested too much into the Kennedy-verse in their theme parks with all the Rey-centric attractions and now they are just doubling down again.
I'm down for a Rey series, but only if it's about finding her mom and the story of how she was was knocked up by Darth Sidious and how he put baby Rey out in a basket the one time she puked over his favorite cloak.
If Locke is going to be the Star Trek hater in that thread, I want to be the Star Wars hater in this thread!

Cancelled because Deadpool 3 is more important than Star Wars... but that's probably a mistake since it looks like that movie will probably end up being an unending tire fire.

This post is over and likely won't be finished because it's an unending tire fire.

It wouldn't matter much who the characters were, all it needs is some good writing to make us care about them.

We still need the zany buddy cop movie with Palpatine and Vader as they go around the galaxy getting drunk on Palpatines private yacht, investigating treason and playing got your nose literally with Tarkin.

Ultimately, this is my biggest complaint.
The characters were thin, bland, uninteresting and uninvolved.
As I keep saying...take the Galaxy from the opening sequence of The Force Awakens to the closing sequence of Rise of Skywalker and...did they accomplish anything?
Do we care? Nope.
Weak characters.

I think that this was one of the biggest failures of the ST. While they had this great idea of handing the torch from the original trilogy characters to a new era of characters, they really didn't do a great job of character development
Fin - Defecting storm trooper (Yes) possibly Force Sensitive (Yes) Principled and willing to die for the republic to whooo guy and comedy foil for Poe by the time the third movie came around.
Poe - probably the best developed character, super pilot, heroic, willing to mutiny when what's her face looked like she was destroying the rebellion. then in the third movie, just flat and relegated to basically making moves on Kerri Russell in the third movie
Rose - In the second movie she was a risk taker, she had a decent idea of a story, was a love interest to Fin. Then in the third movie, and I still laugh at this . Fin "Well I'm glad we're friends now, I'm going into the ultimate all hands on deck battle for the fate of the galaxy, sorry you can't go". Rose - "Yeah I have to study"
Rey - Came from nothing, super over powered off of the start, resourceful and brave. In the second movie took on Luke and pushed him to be better and refind the force. In the third movie she seemed so flat and cookie cutter, but Daisy mailed in her performance. And I'm convinced that the Rey is a Palpatine concept was spur of the moment as a fan service to a pissed off fan base. If she had been a palpatine from the start they could have made her way more interesting by being tempted by the Dark Side of the Force and her inherent nature.
Ren - Just a terrible character from the start, and not that intriguing. He never evolved beyond a petulant spastic teenager from the start, I remember when we first saw him I thought it was a cool look. But as soon as we learned more about him and did the obvious comparison to Anakin/Vader his character was doomed. The third movie turn to the light and then his fight with Palpatine and his death was just bad.
The other problem is that this movie didn't have a great smart villain. Snoke in the first movie was more background, who is he intriguing. Then in the second movie he had a redshirt death, in the third movie we find out that he was born in the jar.
Palpatine was just stupid, there was no subtlety to him at all. It didn't help that JJ tried to re-invent the whole really good Sith Lore that was one of the better parts of the PT. Instead we get Palpatine on a stick in a arena with thousands of cultists, and a whole stupid, sacrifice me concept to Rey, as a twisted version of Strike me down and I will become more powerful then you can imagine.
Oh wait the other villain. Hux, went from devious and nasty in the first movie. To a target of prank phone calls, and an idiot in the second movie. To an I'm a spy and a toss away death in the third movie, there was no point to his character.
Star Wars needs to take a chance with a new trilogy. Having Rey to come back to build the Jedi order makes no sense because we know that a Jedi order means a rise of the Dark side.
I also agree with an earlier post that the Sequel did more to just wreck the lore of the OT then was believable.

My biggest complaint is, why don’t they make everything hover? Seems like touching the ground shouldn’t be necessary at all.

If Darth Vader can pull a whole spaceship (Obi Wan series) on full orbital escape thrust back down the ground (and Ray almost did this to the transport she thought Chewie was on), the least these guys could do is fly around like Superman.
They can already displace masses thousands of times their own body weight and counteract gravity.
Star Wars Jedis should fight like Neo in The Matrix 2.

The Prequels were reviled from their release day until a certain point and the tables started to turn to the point where they're cherished by a new generation. Hayden Christiansen had to disappear for years until a few years ago and now after seeing him on stage today, it's nice to see the fans appreciate him so much so he cried.

The prequels were bad, but they didn't affect the original trilogy or the EU from the novels at the time, so they're easy to overlook or pick some good parts out of. With the new trilogy not only did it completely erase decades of lore from the books that many fans grew up with, it shat all over the original trilogy. Palpatine still alive, Luke being an angry hermit instead of leading a new Jedi order, Leia still being a rebel leader, then dying having accomplished nothing. I don't see how you can be a fan of the original movies and accept the new ones at all

(I really like TLJ Luke but I know I'm a minority and most folk here hate that movie)
(also I think your post is undervaluing how much people were upset about the Prequels at the time. See The Clone Wars not lining up with the Zahn books or changing Boba Fett's back story)

The Luke as a beaten down recluse idea actually came from George Lucas himself.
https://www.gamesradar.com/star-wars...kywalker-dead/
Quote:
Pages from the book, posted on Twitter, reveal that Lucas was going to kill Luke Skywalker in Episode 8, similar to what happened in Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The book also notes that a female Jedi Knight who is trained by Luke was always going to be the central character and that Luke was going to be a Colonel Kurtz-type character – Kurtz being the elusive maniac in Apocalypse Now.
"Years before The Last Jedi began development, the treatment left behind by George Lucas in 2012 also had Episode VIII be the one wherein Luke Skywalker would die," reads one page.
"Rey was on a mission to seek out Luke Skywalker, who had disappeared. As described by George Lucas, Rey is like Willard going up river seeking out Colonel Kurtz, an allusion to Apocalypse Now. The story had Rey find Luke on a Jedi temple planet, but he is a recluse, withdrawn into a very dark space and needs to be drawn back from despair."

I watched a return of the jedi interview where the original ending had Luke after his father died picked up the Darth Vader helmet and destroyed the rebel fleet and killed his friends on the planet.
The OT would end with Luke as the new Emperor and a ST would deal with that.
Also if you look at the original Star Wars script, that was published as a comic. Han Solo was green. Star Destroyers were fighters, Darth Vader was a different person then Anakin Skywalker who was a dirt old disgruntled general. And there were multiple death stars and Palpatine was fat.

As much as I like the Zahn books, and I really liked them, thank god the prequels went in a different direction then his books in terms of the clone wars.
I still chuckle at the naming convention.
Oh no its Luuke Skywalker, who's in the service of Jorruus C'Bath.
Can you imagine a clone wars with a thousand clones of like Mace Windu? Oh no its Mace Winduuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
