If given the choice I'd much rather move on from Sutter than Treliving.
We seem hell bent on playing older, crash and bang type guys while the rest of the league plays with speed, skill, and youth.

I'd move on from both at this point. It's time to try something new on both fronts.

There are more good coaching candidates than good GM candidates. That said, I bet even money Treliving won't even give them a choice.

100%. It's amazing how this is so much the case. We play an outdated system that caters to 'big bodies' and physical presence, while most of the rest of the league goes with speed and skill. The game has evolved, and we're looking to the past for a gameplan.

Some rumblings that Tre is gone due to a poor overall record and that Sutter will potentially be moved to a GM or a POHO position since he's under contract for 2 years at I assume a salary of $3-4 million.
Who knows what will happen but I have felt for a LONG time that this is a very very active GM who's had a million chances to improve this club over the long term and done nothing of the sort. I finance, he's a closet index manager. An active manager who looks like he's doing something but is getting below average returns.

I don't think there has been a more active manager in the league since Treliving was hired.

Sutter getting any sort of power to say who this team trades for or drafts will be the most miserable years. Management can’t be that stupid

Sutter as GM is a terrible decision.

The only option that could be possible but likely not is Dubas, but we don't have hockey guys like Burke to run a GM search.
If Treliving walks we are in trouble.

Teams are judged by playoff success. Treliving has had 9 years now, and how much playoff success have the Flames had under him?
Likely won't do worse under someone else.

I would hope the Flames will bring in a new GM and a new coaching staff

What is this "management" that you speak of. It is becoming clear (if it wasn't before) that Edwards is a meddling owner. Most meddling owners (steinbrenner, Jerry Jones, the Islanders guy, etc) do it publicly. Edwards does it behind the scenes

A lot of really bad free agent signings… lots! How much is that Murray Edwards pushing for them? And blown player management! Brodie, Bennett, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Valimaki, Kylington? Am I missing anyone? And not playing the young guys while picking up garbage vets…. Let’s not forget missed draft opportunities that were no brainers like Demko over what’s his name! Brayden Point in our own back yard! Buh bye. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Real rumblings or just fan theories? I can see it happening but I'd really prefer it not too. Back to drafting plugs if Sutter is GM.

The root of the Flames’ problem, IMO, is not developing enough prospects. The best route to a young, fast, skilled team is to draft as many players as possible. Keep the system full. Unless you’re picking top 5 it’s a crapshoot so the more bullets the better.
Make sure there’s always internal pressure of not one or two but five or six guys pushing for NHL jobs, and don’t be afraid to give them their shots. Get out of the mindset that you can’t afford to take a chance with younger players.
Without a stable of ready prospects and a willingness to use them it’s harder to trade veterans mid-season or to resist signing filler in the summer.

I'd look for the next candidate from outside of the Flames. There is just too much rot down to the core and I think it would be better to look outside org to change the culture.
Maybe someone like Chris MacFarland, Sakic's assistant in Colorado. He has 22 years of experience and is apparently really hands on with Sakic. He has had interest in the past from the Devils and Pens, and comes from a franchise with a winning culture.
For coaches, Mitch Love just seems to make the most sense, especially if they are still paying Darryl. I wouldn't be too broken up if Muller was promoted as well, but his results as powerplay coach haven't been great. There could be some Sutter deployment, and general roster issues with that though.
Edit: Holy crap, where have I been. I didn't realize Sakic already stepped down and made Chris MacFarland the GM.

Do you really want to make the same mistake you just did with Kadri and Huberdeau and sign a player like this for 8 years, likely over $8MM AAV?
Trade him this off-season, retain salary (I know this scares the Murray Edwards), and get a haul for him while you can. Don't turn another asset into an immovable object.
|
I have been a pretty big fan of Lindholm up until this year, but I agree, it's time to move on. They can get a big return for him, and I would rather not see the team paying him huge money for declining years.
