Sure quality goaltending is important, if not the most important position to shore up, but we can't blame everything on Markstrom. He hasn't had a great year, but consider LA had at or near the bottom of the league goaltending up to the trade deadline and they have flirted with 1st in the pacific all year.
The Flames season has been a combo of poor goaltending, lack of finish throughout the lineup and inconsistent defensive coverage. LA doesn't have issues with finishing or playing a tight game and can insulate their goaltending. Flames can't.

Jarome Iginla did just fine in his debut-during the playoffs.

I just don't buy this.

I watch almost all the Nashville games and they aren't any better at preventing rushes. I doubt Winnipeg is either.

Bingo's post mentions GSAA - it takes defense into account.

I don't really watch other games, but when Flames plays, other team almost always had perfect passing and finishing when they had a odd man rush, but Flames usually can't do anything when they had their rushes and ends up the puck carrier just directly shoot to the net and can't beat the goalie.
Not sure if It's because of our forwards talent is low or other teams defense is better.

The goaltending has been poor but of the 5 teams in playoff positions in the pacific we have the 2nd best goal against but the worst goals for.

The division is a high scoring one, thats the league.

Not scoring enough has been just as big of an issue this year as the goaltending and funny enough our goals against is good enough to have us in a playoff spot and even contending for the division if we had 30 more goals. A lift in the shooting % by 1% would have us at almost 300 goals for based on our shots on net this season.

The central would have been easier for us it seems to be a more defensive division.

Um...no?

Literally from NHL.com

Flames are 18th in GF/G with 3.16

They are 13th in GA/G with 3.05

I honestly question where any of you are getting your numbers.

I mean, what's the point of Cheese's amazing GDT if y'all are just going to ignore all the numbers he posts!?

Just wanted to do a quick math check on this...because honestly I'm kinda bored today.

Currently sitting at a 8.9 Shooting% based on 2855 shots. A 1% increase (9.9%-ranked 18th in the league) would have us sitting at 283 goals instead of 253. So 30 more goals over a season. In that scenario we would be at about 3.54 GF/G, ranking us 5th in the entire league instead of 18th.

A single percentage point doesn't mean much in most scenarios, but it does here. The teams inability to finish plays or make more dangerous chances is a big reason for where they are. What's the post count again? 77 according to this article (not sure on the count, but whatever). Count even a 3rd of those and this team wins a lot more of those one-goal games that they lost throughout the year. Get one extra save in OT and you win a bunch more of those OT games.

Worst year I can remember for luck for any team, not just the Flames. The discrepancies between SF and SA vs. GF and GA is glaring, and it's been this way since game 5. Just an utterly cursed season that the players do have some of the blame for, but honestly, they just need an exorcism.

Bingo is quoting 5v5 stats.

The PP is the biggest issue with the teams scoring woes.

They are 8th in goal scoring at 5v5.

But our PP is 20th in GF/60 on the PP.

Kirk Muller and the PP coaching staff probably deserve more criticism.

From 2019-2022 Huberdeau was 3rd in the NHL in PP points behind just McDavid and Draisaitl. Elias Lindholm was 24th in the NHL with 24 PP goals.

They should have been able to build a great PP around those two and instead they haven't been the focal point of the PP at all this season IMO.

For the last half of the season those two aren't even on the same unit.

It should have been Huberdeau passing central high slot to Lindholm or across the road to Toffoli all year. With Kadri or someone similar net front/behind the net.

Hard to believe there is a PP staff that puts actual thought into organizing/strategizing our PP.

The persons behind it should pick a different profession.

That 1% is massive thats why I wanted to be careful anyone can say well if our shooting % is better we score more but we are using such a small number and it increases our goals for dramatically.

That 1% honestly is the difference between missing the playoffs and winning the division which is nuts.

The Flames went into the season trying very much to be like Carolina. Offensively the two teams are very close in terms of GF, Sh%, shot metrics. Difference is that Carolina is elite for goals against and the Flames are mid pack.

There's likely that hard to quantify human factor of confidence where Flames shooters playing behind so much and with pressure squeeze the sticks and perform below expected, and the defensive gaffes are more impactful coming into play too. Same with goaltending where Markstrom and Vladar think about not giving up that one bad goal so much they always seem to.

This is the one thing I've been really puzzled about this year. From very early on I thought it looked like a bad system fit with Huberdeau and I still see it the same way. But I still thought he would be putting up points on the PP no matter what, it's always been his strong suite. And systems shouldn't be an issue.

Honestly what is the strategy on the powerplay?

This isn't to blame Sutter but I am shocked he is not more involved in the powerplay because of how detailed he is in his approach.

Like when he watches them does he not ask Muller what is it exactly you wanted to accomplish with that group for the last 2 minutes.

Its divisional play as well. Every Division the playoff teams have good goals against outside a few teams.

The pacific is on a different level its like we are leaking goals.

I've watched a fair amount of Preds games. Was at the game the other night vs the Canes where Saros posted a shutout. The guy is always in position and makes most saves look routine. Very rare where he slides across the crease and right out of his net. looks cool as a cucumber.
Markstrom flops down every shot and seems more focused on making routine saves look like save of the year candidates. Edmonton ruined him last spring.

When he played with Toffoli, Kadri and Andersson, they practically ignored Hubderdeau and Lindholm. It was a powerplay on one side of the ice.

Now he's playing with the Backlund unit for some reason.
