Watching that highlight pack, I wouldn't say he's quite on the same level as Pavelski, but he's getting there with his close-in play.

In tight goals yeah, but Tkachuk sees the ice better and is a far better passer.

And he's a dink. Team misses him terribly.

If you can take Tkachuk at his word, he wanted to be a Flame for the long term.

Said he wanted 6-8 years after his entry level. I, personally, believe him.

Actions speak louder than words. Lot of things are said to placate people.

Either way I wasn't against moving him, BT did turn a tough situation into some value. Obviously hindsight is that he held off on signing massive extensions.

Considering the draft and the depth of it, this would have been an ideal year to start that rebuild.

O well.

I commented on the C thing...he was speculating Tkachuk didn't sign because they wouldn't give him the C

Also, he said he wanted to sign long term last may to so take his word with a grain of salt

“In the middle of training camp, [Treliving] was like, ‘The only way we can keep this team together is [signing you for] three years.’ I was like ‘Okay, this isn’t my ideal situation.'”
I get it that Brads a GM and I'm not, but 3 years with a $9m qualifying year is all kinds of dumb and dumber, it's not rocket science, 2 years or long term for a star player.

Keep the team together my ass, how about this Brad, if you're still around how about use your young players in the system as needed to save cap space instead of signing useless players like you did with Rieder, Rinaldo, Yelesin and Davidson that year.

Pretty amazing season by his junior line mate Marner too. That was a historic Knights team

It's a possibility seeing his brother did that. However I just don't understand why Treliving wouldn't have worked harder to make that work. The 3 year deal was always going to be worst case scenario for the Flames as you never want to give the player the option to walk in his prime.

If you take Tkachuk at his word he wanted to sign an 8 year extension at the end of the last year as well but oh wait he didn’t. Here are his exact words at garbage bag day last May

“Absolutely,” Tkachuk said when asked if he’d be open to signing a long-term deal to stay with the Calgary Flames. “I’ve loved it here. I’ve grown up here. The more I think about It, I came here and didn’t really know anything about Calgary. I didn’t know anything about Western Canada. My mom’s from Winnipeg, so I guess that’s as far west as I knew and kind of just fell in love with it here.

“So, yeah, to answer your question, I would be very open (to a long-term deal)

This franchise is truly poorly run

It doesn’t matter what his words were. Money talk.
Bottom line Treliving has an opportunity to sign their franchise player long term and gave in and signed him 3 yrs. That gave him the right to walk. Unless of course Treliving didn’t believe in his talent. Talent evaluation is one of his weakness.
One of the many screwed ups by Treliving. The franchise is arguably worse than when he found it. Time for new face.

Yes the talk of Keith’s plan to have his kids out of Canada is hogwash. Unless you believe Keith treats his kid differently. Treliving just fumbled the negotiations. Ottawa believe Brady is their franchise player, Treliving doesn’t think Matthew is. Florida believe he is a Unicorn and paid the price for him. So far they are right.

The Flames saw how successful teams are built in the NHL and thought "we'll do it our own way".

I had always assumed it was a three-year deal because Tkachuk wouldn't do longer, but we also don't know what kind of money he wanted for a longer deal then. Maybe he wanted 9 or something, which would have been a lot for him back then. That would make more sense of Treliving's comments.

I think it's also quite possible that he was sincere in wanting to sign long term after his entry level and was not sincere on long term last summer. I think when the team wouldn't commit to him initially, he decided piss on this organization.
