The Wranglers and Firebirds both win on Saturday. Phillips gets his 15th GWG, of course.
The Firebirds play Henderson tomorrow, to pull even in games played.

Probably an opinion for another thread, but my guess is that Matthew Phillips is a Chicago Wolf next season. The Wolves are shucking their Carolina affiliation and are going fully independent. That's basically been their M.O. since their founding, as the history of abandoned NHL partners can attest.
The Wolves are into winning, not development, and are prepared to spend to achieve that. How better than bringing in hired guns like the AHL leading goalscorer and a possible Calder Cup MVP?

I think they’ll definitely reach out but there’s no way Phillips is looking for an AHL only contract. He can definitely get an NHL deal somewhere, maybe even a one-way from a GM that’s equally desperate and creative. Signing with the Wolves would be a last resort for Phillips, it’s acknowledgment that his NHL plans are done.

in that situation, for players that sign with the Wolves, would their (presumably) AHL-only contract give them an "out-clause" to be signed and called up to the NHL? Unless Phillips has given up on his NHL dream, might be fewer hoops to jump through if he signs with an NHL team with an AHL affiliate
I assume he is going to receive a Gawdin- or Froese-like contract. Two years, with guaranteed money ~$1M total. He won't be NHL rich, but he will still be rich

Salary comparable to, or better than, the Swiss National League and arguably a better NHL escape route.
Now maybe he won't, but I'm sure the Wolves are prepared to throw crazy (AHL-level) money at him.

I can't imagine Phillips getting more money on an AHL-only deal. Doesn't make any sense for him, honestly. I actually think he'd be more inclined to stay at home in Calgary if he were content to play in the AHL only.

Echoing some of the other opinions, but I think Phillips is going to be looking for his easiest path to the NHL. I think the Chicago Wolves will have a very difficult time signing any AAAA AHL players.
My “homer” Wrangler view would like to see him sign a similar contract that the Blackhawks did with Luke Philp. 2-way deal with higher guaranteed AHL salary.
With Minnesota being in cap jail from the two buyouts for the upcoming couple seasons… I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get a look there on a league minimum 1-way deal.

Minnesota, Seattle, and Arizona make the most sense to me.

I'm just kind of assuming that Phillips will get signed by whichever team Treliving is GM'ing next year. I think Tre likes the kid but has a coach that doesn't.

Three points in the final three games to clinch first.
The Wranglers can clinch on Wednesday with a win and a Firebirds loss.

Wolf 1 win away from tying Budaj for most wins in the ahl going back to 2005 that's the most wins I could find for a goalie in the ahl.
