We're back where we were for most of the 2010s. Too good to be bad, but not actually good. In the next 5 years we'll probably have one overachieving season where we flirt with the top of the division, one underachieving season where we finish around 22d in the nhl, and three years either making it as a wildcard team or just missing out - like this year.

We'll probably even win a playoff round or two during those five seasons, but we definitely won't win two rounds in a single year.

The only way I see this going differently is if Wolf actually is the saviour. .925 goaltending will carry a mediocre team a long, long way.
I suppose Karlsson, Vlasic, and Couture are preventing the sharks from rebuilding then?

It’s easy to rebuild and if you have trash vets it makes it way easier to lose games.

I hope Sutter stays.

In the history of the team I have not disliked two players more than Kadri and Huberdeau.

The irony that these two were awarded the largest contracts in franchise history without playing a single game.

These two signings are up there with the largest blunders in professional sports and will damage the team for years.

I can’t see how Treliving keeps his job following this epic debacle.

They kind of are, because they can't do what Arizona does and take on dead money contracts from other teams by accepting draft pick compensation. Resigning Hertl and trading Burns for a bucket of pucks didn't help them. They could have traded all of them the same way they did with Meier.

what an absolute turd of a season. Typical Flames fashion too to beat Winnipeg, but lose to Chicago and Vancouver before and after that ... they frankly don't deserve playoff hockey, and they only have themselves to blame for falling short.

NHL purgatory once again, between playoffs and the lottery. Just brutal.

There are people that think Treliving is great. True story.

We’re going to end up drafting 15th. We have an old, expensive team that is over the (rumoured) salary cap for 2023/2024, and we have a mediocre prospect pool.

This team should not under-react to the irrelevancy of their existence. Time to start planning a roster build from scratch. Hopefully get the foundation in before the new arena is built and online.
Top 14 players are going to be studs from this years draft.

Tbh, I think people are scared of the alternative more than they think Tre is a great GM

This fanbase hasn't been exposed to good GM'ing for threw decades now also.

Treliving started fine, but then he rushed the timeline when the team wasn't good enough yet. His questionable trades giving up future assets that didn't yield favourable returns, bad UFA signings, and terrible coaching hires - where ownership had to step in and bring in the best coach during his whole tenure - overall makes him a mediocre GM, and Flames won't lose someone they can't replace/improve upon quality this summer.

I actually think he's more suited for a hockey ops role than GM since he does seem to have good hockey business sense savvy. But the team needs a GM that has better vision with construction of the locker room. A GM that can assemble a good roster in today's NHL, develop a prospect base that'll supplement the roster throughout the years, and knows how to pick out the right coaching staff to produce the best output from the roster assembled.

I think Tre was starting to understand the importance of drafting your team, rather than trading/signing for it, but it was too late. And even still, this summer he traded a 1st in the Monahan trade to bring in Kadri. And again in Treliving fashion, that transaction hasn't panned out as he would've expected. The Flames would be better off with the first, and have valuable cap space.

Oh I agree. Ultimately the team is pretty much in the same spot as it was when he came in a decade ago. I think it’s time to move on from both him and Sutter

Time to play the kids.
Let them learn to play in a high (not really) pressure game.

Lucic won’t be back, Ritchie can sit too.
Insert some skill, some speed and some desire to just want to be on the ice.

Coronato and Pelletier please. Give us fans 2 final games with something to look forward to. These kids deserve it based on the product on the ice.

But that would be disrespectful to the veterans

I agree, mostly. But don't you think that a 0.900% would have put them easily into the playoffs. Average goaltending and they start playoffs at home, 0.925% and they are top in the west.

What else can Treliving do when your owner gives you your mandate that you must always attempt to win, avoid rebuilds like the plague, or you lose your job?

Treliving will be gone this off-season, and it will be his choice. That is absolutely terrifying.

I hated almost every move last summer, but for a manager trying to keep his team competitive despite losing by far his two best players, there is nothing else he could have done.

The person who deserves 100% of the blame is Edwards.

I keep hearing this, but I see no indication that this was not an option this year, after Gaudreau and Tkachuk left.

I like tre more than most and even I can say his time has come to an end. I don’t want Sutter to stay. I don’t like his system or stubbornness. I still don’t understand why our best passer doesn’t play on a line with our best scorer? 6 games at start of season and that’s that? Hell even now on PP units he still sticks hubby with kadri. Also hate man to man in the defensive zone. This team wasn’t set up for Sutter hockey , but I’m not sure Sutter hockey works in todays nhl anyways.

Every media member close to the team won't even discuss a rebuild because they know it won't happen. What else needs to be said?

Not happening.

Not until we are eliminated, if we are.
