Calgary families say wait times for blood work have ballooned since the private company Dynalife took over community clinics, and they're worried it could be dangerous for their loved ones.
In Calgary, routine lab appointments are now booking roughly five weeks out, or longer.

Alberta Health Services (AHS) contracted Edmonton-based Dynalife Medical Labs to take over community lab service last year, making it responsible for 50 million Alberta tests a year.

"I think it's crazy that we are in this situation," said Candice McLellan, whose 12-year-old son, Keegan, has Grave's disease, an autoimmune disorder that causes an overactive thyroid.

"He's in and out of the hospital all the time. He's waiting for appointments all the time. So this is just an added stress for him."

But Dynalife halted community blood collections at many hospitals, including all of Calgary's, when it took over.

"We're very aware that it is an issue," AHS vice-president Dr. Sid Viner said at Thursday's news conference.

"And we'll work with Dynalife to improve it. That's the bottom line."

CBC News asked Viner if reopening community blood collection in hospitals, in particular Alberta Children's Hospital, is on the table.

"I'll give you the honest answer, which is that hadn't come to my attention. But having brought it to my attention, we'll definitely look at that."

#### this government infuriates me. Worse than useless, and all to stick it to the NDP who actually had a plan, a facility under construction, and cancelled it because #### the citizens of this province.

in many instances the collecting sites are still open, but only for patients with appointments that day within the hospital and not for general community use (and increasing restrictions at that- I'm simplifying an aggravating issue)


its a major problem/nuisance generally but definitely at the Children's specifically as for many challenging patients (either hard blood draws, chronic illness, neurodevelopmental disorders) the Children's hospital is their best- if not only- bet at a successful blood draw

I know at the Foothills they closed the North Tower clinic, that was used by a lot of patients with special needs. They left the one open(probably begrudgingly in Special Services that is used for the Cancer Centre patients, so now all the North Tower patients go there too, because the tests they need can't be drawn at community clinics in many cases.

The UCP is not responsible enough to be left in charge of our health care, least of all by someone who blames cancer patients for not seeing their naturopath sooner.

Like, ####, how can this be any more clear? And 50% of the province supports these muppets? Can someone explain this to me logically, because I can't figure it out. I know UCP supporters are around here, can you provide a reason why you don't care about healthcare enough to leave it with them? Do you just never get sick? Don't have friends or family members with conditions? What is it that makes this OK to you? Is a 3 year wait to see a specialist reasonable(not surgery, initial consultation, and not elective).

She's basically saying it's OK because she had made a promise before she was halfheartedly made leader by a tiny minority of the province. So she kept that promise, which apparently ranks higher than any legal issue that would prevent it.

So let that be a lesson, folks. If there is one thing Danielle Smith does do, it's keep promises. Like charging to see doctors, funneling tax dollars to woo woo "medicine", co-pays for medically necessary(read:staying alive) surgeries, de-funding public education, and $20 billion of taxpayer money for deadbeat oil companies. Oh, and making things right for all those selfish mother####ers who couldn't do the bare minimum to protect our vulnerable and health care system. But go ahead and vote for her, since that what some of you some to want.

I was wondering if you could help me schedule a time to have a call with our premier? I understand she is taking time to have private conversations with citizens to resolve their issues. Don't worry, it's not anything legal before the courts that is off limits and might have her in trouble with, well, everyone, it's just concerns I have as a citizen. If you could set that up for me, that would be great.

I think the UCP supporters on here have shown that all they care about are themselves. Can’t vote NDP because their taxes might go up. And willing to burn the province down to support that.
