You don't see it what way? That it is trashy misinformation designed to mislead people who don't read past a headline? Or that we should be OK having our community littered with trash and feces?

I think the problem is that a lot of you are too old and out of touch with the new internet and unable to just ignore something/someone you don’t like.

I mean, hell, here are people who put posters on ignore, tell everyone they put posters on ignore, and then continue repeatedly referencing the recent posts of posters they have publicly claimed to have on ignore lol. It’s kind of… pathetic? No?

I agree that banning certain posters would be good (I’m sure some people feel the same about me so, noted) but given that doesn’t happen unless the person is an explicit racist or something, you can just ignore the ones you feel bring no value.

Or not. Which is fine too. I just think those that preface it with “I’m fighting disinformation, I’m not convincing him I’m convincing readers who might be convinced by him blah blah blah” are fooling themselves. Just admit you like mocking Yoho. He’s easy to mock. It’s fun. It’s all fun and games here. No one is changing the world.

Nah.

It’s easier to just mock someone than it is to point out the flawed logic in what they post.

I fight with myself over this premise a lot. I understand what you are saying, but advertising is a multibillion dollar brainwashing industry for a reason. Companies don't spend millions to have their ad's in every single commercial break for the fun of it - they know that if they keep hammering the same message over and over it changes peoples views on it.

So when I look at Yoho's posts, there is a group of people who think its all BS and ignore it or mock him, there's a group that totally agree and don't say anything or risk reprisal, and there is a group that doesn't know any better - and if no one is responding to dispute the posts, then that last group will start to move into the agree group.

I balance this knowing that CP is mostly a closed system, I don't think there are a lot of drive by readers going to the political forums, and most people will have an idea of where they stand already.

But unlike the message I just watched on youtube from Rebecca Shultz where most of it is half truths or no context, there is no reply, you just get hammered with it. At least here there is discourse where misinformation can be refuted.

So, I don't agree with Yoho's views but I think he should be free to post whatever he wants, and people should be free to take those views apart. Banning and ignoring opposing viewpoints doesn't lead to discourse, only resentment. I think the name calling is getting out of hand, but if he wants to post a tweet with no context and someone has a logical argument why its disinformation then I think both have a place in any open forum. His silence on most of these rebuttals just illustrates how fragile his position is most of the time.

The most annoying thing on CP is the 15 or so posters that go absolutely mental after every Yoho post, because they're worried someone else might watch/read his Twitter reference and not have the intelligence to dismiss it themselves.

What is the harm in responding and pointing out what is wrong with what they’re sharing? Assuming that everyone is smart enough to dismiss that kind of crap is how we end up with frivolous occupations of major cities and border blockades. There’s a lot of otherwise seemingly intelligent posters who’ve bought into some of the garbage that Yoho shares.

Yoho DMed me once about something in a sub-forum. It was a polite, friendly and kind message. There is a person behind the username. Creating a thread, and then bumping it weeks later, just to talk #### about that person is not a shining example of how to contribute to a good community.

Start a thread on the quality of moderation on CP if that's a problem. Might lead to a more productive discussion.

I agree with this. The board used to be more a community in general, I think. It's just not as tight as it was "before". I'm not sure what to attribute that to, but a lot posters who were part of that have left and maybe things were too caustic for them?
Or not caustic enough? I think 4x4 left because he felt over-moderated, but I don't know for sure. I think if he was allowed to just unleash on people we'd still have him. There's nothing better than hammering out a post absolutely laying into somebody you find annoying and stupid. I hold back because I really don't want to get banned as this is all I have, but my dream would be to allow swears and insults. I thought I had that in r/norulescalgary, but it turns out there are unwritten rules against insulting people, so that ended just as fast as it started for me.

I think you can have community and be somewhat caustic. I honestly can't stand super positive people and I happen to like insults. My daughter said, "goodnight, losers" to me and my wife last night and it warmed my heart.

This makes me so happy. It's like the percent difference between your age and the average age here is shrinking. I've felt like you haven't noticed that happening, but I knew at some point you'd look around at realize you're just an old lame dude like the rest of us. Very heartened to hear the news about the grey. Lemme know when you need a CPAP and if you get the gout.

I still contend that Yoho, while one of the worst posters ever on this board, is less to blame than the addicts who need their "Owning Yoho" fix. But as Weitz says he's a traffic driver, even if it's in the worst possible way, so he is, at least from a business perspective, good for the site. Once he's ignored and becomes a liability, he will probably be booted. But as long as he brings eyes to the board, he'll have to really go over the line to get banned. So once again, for the love of ####ing God, just ignore him and his boilerplate right wing grift posts. I promise you it's not only easy, but incredibly rewarding.

Or make broad discussion of what is or is not allowed in threads. Do memes, Tweets or parody videos belong in a political discussion thread?
